SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Hanno Mottola and Utah look to bounce back from their first loss in more than a month when they take on San Diego State on Sunday in their Mountain West opener.
The 18th-ranked Utes (11-3) will look to Mottola, the team's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder, to help put Thursday's 75-55 loss to Louisville behind them. The defeat snapped a nine-game winning streak for Utah, which last lost at Weber State on Dec. 1.
Mottola, averaging 24.5 points and six rebounds in six starts since returning from a preseason knee injury, scored a team-high 27 points in Thursday's blowout loss.
"We just embarrassed ourselves," Mottola said. "It looked like the first time we ever played basketball - just terrible.
"We did not get back and we did not rebound. If you don't play defense and rebound, you have no chance."
Utah is shooting 50 percent from the floor this season, but shot just 41 percent (18-for-43) against Louisville. Alex Jensen, second on the team with 13.4 points per game, was held to seven points on 3-of-7 shooting.
Utah point guard Gary Colbert had been coming on of late but was held scoreless Thursday and is averaging only three points in his last three games. Colbert leads the team in assists with 4.5 per game.
San Diego State (5-7) had a two-game winning streak snapped in its last outing, a 72-66 loss to Cal State-Fullerton on Wednesday.
The Aztecs have recovered from a 2-5 start to win three of their last five games.
Marcelo Correa leads the Aztecs with 6.9 rebounds per game, 22 steals and 14 blocks, and will likely draw the defensive assignment on Mottola.
Correa is second on the team with 11.7 points per game, but is averaging just nine points per game in his last six outings.
Bradley Jackson, San Diego State's freshman point guard, has been pushed into action because of lack of depth and has responded. Jackson is averaging 11.6 points and nine assists in his last three games and is second on the team with 19 steals.
