Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's soccer team (9-6-1, 2-2 MWC) scored two second half goals to beat San Diego State (5-11, 2-2 MWC) 2-0 at Ute Field. The win gave Utah a sweep in conference play this weekend, as they upended Nevada-Las Vegas 4-0 on Thursday.
Goalkeeper Courtney Hills posted six saves to earn her second consecutive shutout, and the Ute offense stayed aggressive throughout the game, finally breaking through in the second half. Junior Amy Kofoed scored the eventual decisive goal in the 58th minute. Kofoed put Utah on top 1-0 when she dribbled past SDSU defenders and blistered a ball into the bottom left corner. That goal proved to be enough with Hills' in goal and the aggressive Utah offense keeping the ball out of the Aztecs possession. Sophomore Shauna Gurr tacked on some insurance in the 88th minute when she collected a Katie Tate shot and punched it in. Tate opened up the net with two quick attempts-on-goal that Aztec goalie Linnea Quinones denied, but couldn't halt the entire barrage. Neither team could establish a rhythm early on, with 22 total fouls being called in the first half on tick-tack fouls. It appeared the only foul that wasn't called in the opening frame was when Kofoed broke away on a scoring run, but was obviously checked to the ground in the box. The win over SDSU puts the teams in a tie for third place in the Mountain West Conference. Both teams are jockeying for the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament with UNLV who is a game up for second place, while Brigham Young looks to be running away with the top-seed.
Utah finishes its regular season on the road at Wyoming Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. and Air Force Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
