Provo, Utah - The University of Utah men's tennis team will continue competition at the BYU Invitational, Oct. 5-7. Yesterday in the singles brackets, Corrie Sheepers advanced to the next round by defeating Utah State's Tim Burrel, 6-3, 6-2. Daniel Carlsson will also advance after edging out Brett Keys from Montana in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 contest.
David Mercier shut-down Montana's Ryan O'Neill, 6-4, 6-1, and Patrick Wallebring took Ryan Burbidge from Utah State to task, 6-2, 6-1. Teammates Mercier and Wallebring competed against each other in a 10:00 a.m. match-up today. Nik Yip showed promise with his 6-5, 6-1 victory over Boise State's Mahmuud Resk.
Senior Kevin Zenger played tough, but fell short and was beaten by Utah State's Andy Madersbacher 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Kaisorn Chaichana fell to BYU's Gert Vilms in a 6-1, 6-1 contest.
In the doubles competition, Sheepers and Mercier came out victorious in their first round match-up, as did Zenger and Yip. Carlsson and Wallebring were beaten by a Boise State duo
Play is scheduled to resume on Fri., Oct. 6, and will be wrapped up on Sat., Oct. 7. The Utes will then compete at the Rolex ITA Region VII Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 25-29.
