SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team signed four players during the early signing period. Only five Utah high school players signed during this period, with the Utes being the lone in-state school to receive letters of intent.
Utah signed Matt Ciaramella, Doug MacKay, Jared Snyder, and Bret Baldwin, all of whom are being touted together as potentially the best recruiting class in Coach Tim Esmay's tenure at Utah.
Ciaramella is an outfielder from Skyline High School. He played for the Utah Baseball Academy traveling squad, in the Area Code games, and at the Best of the West and Team One showcases. He has been nationally recognized by baseball prognosticators as one of the top outfield prospects in the country. He turned down several schools to stay in Salt Lake, such as, the Pac-10's Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Kansas.
"We feel, by far, Matt is one of the best outfielders to come through the state in my six years," said Esmay. "We are looking for him to make an immediate impact on the program."
MacKay comes to Utah from Bingham High School. The Region 2 Football Player of the Year is probably the best athlete in the class. He is an outfielder/pitching prospect. He participated in the Area Code games. MacKay selected Utah over New Mexico and UCLA.
"Doug is considered the top right handed pitcher in Utah and is considered a top pitching prospect in the country," said Esmay. "We like his athleticism and the toughness he brings to our program."
Snyder is among the top defensive catchers in the state. He is finishing his prep career at Alta High School. He competed in the Area Code games, for the Utah Baseball Academy traveling squad, and showcased his talents at Team One. Snyder turned down in-state rival BYU.
"Jared is one of the best catch and throw guys to come through the state. We're excited about his potential and the high ceiling he provides as a Ute," said Esmay.
Baldwin is a shortstop out of West Jordan High School. He was a member of the Utah Baseball Academy traveling squad and displayed his talents at the Team One showcase. He chose Utah over Mountain West Conference opponent New Mexico.
"Bret has a chance to be an outstanding shortstop at the University of Utah. He has all the tools to be an excellent shortstop," said Esmay.
"This class has a chance to be the finest recruiting class at Utah in my six years," said Esmay. "It's exciting to see Utah players turn down more traditionally alluring programs to stay here. The caliber of this class is an indication that our program is on the rise."
