SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team is 5-6 on the season including two wins over No. 16 ranked Loyola Marymount (4-3, 6-2). The Utes took three losses to No. 22 ranked Arizona State, two to Pacific and one loss to the Lions.
Up this Week
The Utes travel to San Diego, Calif., to play a three-game series against San Diego Feb. 25-27. Friday's game against the Toreros is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 1:00 p.m. All games will be played at Cunningham Stadium.
A Quick Look at San Diego
The Toreros are 9-5-1 including a 2-1 split against Cal. Poly-SLO who also took two losses against the Utes (8-5, 8-5) earlier this season. Utes in the Mountain West

The Utes are third in the league with a team earned run average of 5.84. The Utes have two pitchers, Jared Cavaness and David Ebright, that have pitched complete games. Recent Results
The Utes claimed two games and lost one to No. 16 ranked Loyola Marymount. Utah started the three-game series with a 4-3 victory over the Lions. In the top of the ninth, catcher Donald Hawes and third baseman Mike Goff both hit RBI singles to break a 2-2 tie and win the game. In the second game, the Lions jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Utah scored one run in the fourth inning when catcher Josh France hit a double and scored on a Lion error. LMU rounded out the game scoring solo runs in the eighth and ninth to win the game 4-1. In the final game of the series, Utah scored one run in the fourth on a double by centerfielder Sam Swenson that was batted in by rightfielder Jed Chrisman. The Utes then scored five runs in the top of the sixth on five singles to boost the Utes to a 6-2 victory.
On the Mound
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Bailey pitched eight innings in Utah's 6-2 trouncing of the Lions. The hurler allowed only six hits and two earned runs for a 2.25 weekend ERA. Bailey is 1-1 this season with a 7.84 overall ERA. He has pitched 10.1 innings, allowed 11 hits and struck out two batters.
Mitch Maio still leads the Utes with a perfect 0.00 ERA. The sophomore pitched one inning of relief against LMU, facing three batters and striking out one. Maio has made four appearances this year, playing 7.2 innings. He is second on the team with 12 strikeouts. He has given up only three hits and one unearned run. Maio leads the conference in ERA and a .115 opposing batting average.
Relief specialist Jon Lewis is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA. The junior college transfer pitched one inning in Utah's 4-1 loss to Loyola Marymount. In the game he faced five batters allowing only one hit. The junior has made three appearances this season playing eight innings. He is fourth on the team with nine strikeouts.

Rounding the Bases
Jed Chrisman slammed a double and a home run to help the Utes to a 4-3 victory over Loyola Marymount. The rightfielder was 7-of-11 over the weekend posting a .636 series batting average and leading the team with four RBI. The series boosts Chrisman's season batting average to .395, the highest on the team. He leads the team with eight RBI, 15 hits and two home runs and is tied for third on the team with two doubles.
Junior Sam Swenson leads the Utes with four doubles and is second on the team with seven RBI. The centerfielder posts a .326 batting average. He is second for the Utes with 14 hits and leads the team with two home runs. He also owns a perfect fielding percentage from 22 putouts. Swenson returns this season after recovering from a back injury that left him sidelined after playing only eleven games last year. Swenson is ninth in the Mountain West with 26 total bases.
Nate Weese is third on the team with 13 hits. The sophomore owns a .295 batting average including two home runs and four RBI. In the field, Weese leads the Utes with 112 putouts from 118 chances.
