Utah will play one of its biggest dual matches of the year as it will host BYU on Mar. 3. Last year, the Utes and Cougars split their two matches, each winning on the other's home court. On Feb. 16, Utah improved its home record to a perfect 3-0 on Wednesday with a 7-0 drubbing of Idaho State. The win improves the Utes overall mark to 3-4 in dual matches.
Last Week:
Utah started quickly, sweeping the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The Utes' No. 3 team of Daniel Carlsson and David Laverty won their match in convincing fashion, downing the Bengal's Erkki Torn and George Devidze, 8-3.
Ashley Dyer led the way for Utah's dominance in singles play hitting for a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win over Idaho State's No. 1 singles player, George Kynervetis. The Utes' freshman duo of Laverty and Carlsson continued their winning ways as Laverty beat Malcolm Swan, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and Carlsson aced George Devidze, 6-0, 6-2. Carlsson holds the team's best singles mark at 5-2 overall.
On Feb. 19, the Utes continued their hot streak at home, winning its third consecutive match to improve the season's team record at the Eccles Tennis Center to 4-0 and the Utes overall mark to 4-4. Utah downed Portland 6-1 dropping its season record to 2-7.
Utah began the match by squeaking out a heavily contested doubles point. The No. 1 match was won by Portland and the No. 2 by the Utes. The No. 3 match was the deciding one as the Utah freshman duo of David Laverty and Daniel Carlsson edged Peter Malacek and George Agapitos, 9-8 after the tie-breaker.
The Utes rolled after the momentum of the doubles win, taking five of six singles matches. Carlsson continued his tough play as he won his fourth match in the last five contests, downing Joe Tostenrude, 7-5, 6-0. Carlsson has a team best 6-2 dual singles record.
Next Week:
The Utes will head back on the season's longest road-trip, playing five matches in eight days. All of the matches will be played in California, including Malibu, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Newport. Utah's opponents include Pepperdine, San Diego, Southern California, UCI and Dartmouth.
