SALT LAKE CITY -- Ute senior 6-9 forward Hanno M?tt?l?, who has been suffering from a left elbow sprain and a sprained right thumb, will not play Thursday against San Diego State and is out indefinitely, according to team trainer Trevor Jameson.
The Utah medical staff is awaiting results from further tests before it will determine when M?tt?l? can return to action. However, there is a distinct possibility that upon further MRI's, diagnostic tests and consultation from at least two more physicians that M?tt?l? could be out for the remainder of the year. The medical staff will not be able determine this until at least Thursday. If M?tt?l? does return, it will be on a limited, game-to-game basis. M?tt?l?'s injury could be season ending but not career ending since it can be surgically repaired. At the appropriate time, a determination will be made if surgery is necessary.
M?tt?l? suffered the thumb injury in the first half and the elbow injury in the second half of Utah's game at Air Force on Jan. 29. He came back to finish the game and remained in the lineup for Utah's games against New Mexico and UNLV last week.
