Coming Up
Should Utah beat Michigan State, it would advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional next Thursday and Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich. In the regional semifinals, the Utes would face the winner of Syracuse/Kentucky, which preceeds the Utah/Michigan State game on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. (EST).
A Quick Look at Utah
The Runnin' Utes are 23-8 record after defeating Saint Louis (48-45) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night. Utah ended the regular season by defeating Air Force in the Mountain West Conference Tournament quarterfinals (74-65) before losing to Brigham Young in the semifinals (58-54). The Utes went 10-4 during the regular season in the Mountain West Conference, tying UNLV for the inaugural league championship. After starting the conference season with an 8-1 record, the Utes lost three of their last five regular season games. All eight of Utah's losses this season have come away from the Huntsman Center, giving it a 4-7 record on the road and a 2-1 mark on neutral courts. The Utes were 17-0 at home this season.
Senior 6-9 forward Hanno Mottolo, who has missed 11 games this season due to injuries, leads the Utes in scoring average (17.1 ppg) and is tied for second in rebounding (4.8 rpg). Senior 6-7 forward Alex Jensen is second on the team in scoring average (13.1 ppg) and is tops in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Jensen is also shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 45.9 percent from three-point range. Junior 6-11 center Nate Althoff is third in scoring (9.7 ppg), tied for second in rebounding (4.8 rpg) and leads the team in field goal percentage (59.6). Senior 6-5 guard Tony Harvey is averaging 2.48 assists per game.
Utah is outscoring the opposition 70.7 to 61.5 points per game and has a 34.1 to 28.8 edge in rebounding. The Utes are shooting 48.0 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from three-point range and 72.1 percent from the free throw line.

Scouting Michigan State
The Spartans (27-7), seeded No. 1 in the Midwest, earned an automatic berth to the NCAAs by winning the Big Ten Conference Tournament. En route to the tournament title, Michigan State defeated Iowa (75-65), Wisconsin (56-46) and Illinois (76-61). Michigan State also won the Big Ten regular-season championship with a 13-3 mark. The Spartans defeated 16th-seeded Valparaiso, 65-38, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
Senior 6-7 forward Morris Peterson and senior 6-2 guard Mateen Cleaves were named all-Big Ten selections by both the coaches and media, while Peterson was also selected as the league MVP by the coaches and the MVP of the Big Ten Tournament. Peterson leads the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), three-point shooting (.423) and rebounding (6.3 rpg). Cleaves, who missed the first 13 games this season due to injury, is third on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg) and leads the team in assists (7.6 apg). Junior 6-3 guard Charlie Bell, a third-team all-Big Ten Pick, is second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg)
Michigan State is outscoring the opposition 74.2-58.8 points per game and leads the NCAA in rebound margin with a 40.0-27.3 edge on the boards per contest. The Spartans are shooting 47.3 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three-point range and 72.8 percent from the free throw line.
Head Coach Tom Izzo
In his fifth year, Tom Izzo is 115-48. He was named the USBWA District Coach of the Year this season. In 1999, Izzo was named the national coach of the year by Basketball Times. He owns a 7-2 record in NCAA Tournament play and an 8-4 record in postseason tournaments (not including the Big Ten Tournament).
Utah/Michigan State Series Notes
The Utes are 4-0 all-time against Michigan State with two of those meetings coming on neutral courts. Rick Majerus is 1-0 against Michigan State, coaching Utah to an 85-84 win over the Spartans in double overtime in the second round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. That win allowed Utah to advance to its first NCAA Sweet 16 under Majerus.
Utah/Michigan State Common Opponents
Utah and Michigan State each played Kentucky and Texas during the regular season. Both the Utes (56-48 on Nov. 19) and the Spartans (60-58 on Dec. 23) lost to Kentucky in Lexington. Michigan State lost to Texas (81-74) in the finals of the Puerto Rico Shootout on Nov. 27, while Utah defeated the Longhorns (79-73) on Dec. 22 in Salt Lake City.
NCAA First Round Rewind
Jeff Johnsen's off-balance three-pointer barely beating the shot clock with 1:43 left carried Utah to a 48-45 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday night in the Midwest Regional.
Johnsen's shot from his hip gave the Utes (23-8) their first lead since early in the second half. After Johnsen's shot put the Utes ahead 46-44, John Redden hit a foul shot for Saint Louis (19-14). The Billikens were just 9-of-22 at the line, while the Utes went 9-of-19. Phil Cullen, who led Utah with 12 points, added a free throw with 11.5 seconds remaining before teammate Alex Jensen added another with 9.6 seconds remaining. Saint Louis hurried the ball downcourt, with Redden whipping a pass to a wide-open Dave Fergerson whose three-pointer with a second left bounded off the back of the rim as the final horn sounded.
There were seven ties and neither team led by more than five points in a game marked by physical play, chest-to-chest defense and poor shooting. Utah hit just 39 percent of its shots from the field to the Billikens' 38 percent. The Utes were 9-for-21 from three-point range, but just 6-for-18 on 2-point shots.
Hanno Mottolo had 11 points for the Utes. Alex Jensen contributed nine points and seven rebounds, helping to give Utah a 32-26 edge on the boards.
Utah defeated Saint Louis despite some less-than-impressive numbers. The Utes committed a season-high 21 turnovers in the game. Utah also made a season-low 15 field goals, which contributed to tying a season minimum with 48 points.
From the Training Room
Senior 5-11 guard Jeremy Killion severely bruised a bone in his left knee 15 second into the second half of Thursday night's game against Saint Louis and is not expected to play Saturday. Junior 6-11 center Nate Althoff missed most of the second half of Thursday night's game with back spasms. Althoff has suffered from back troubles most of the season and is questionable for Saturday's game. Sophomore 6-2 guard Adam Sharp sprained his right ankle just before the end of the first half of Utah's MWC Tournament semifinal game against BYU last Friday. Sharp did not play Thursday and is questionable for Saturday. Freshman 6-8 forward Mike Puzey was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his left fibula March 3. He missed three games until playing on Thursday against Saint Louis.
Not Getting Much, But Not Giving Up Much
Despite the 48-45 win over Saint Louis, Utah's offensive woes continued. For the fourth time in its last six games, Utah shot less than 40 percent from the field against the Billikens. The Utes shot 38.5 percent from the field on Thursday after shooting a season-low 30.9 percent in a 58-54 loss to Brigham Young last Friday in the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals. The Utes also shot 32.7 percent in a 60-49 loss to Colorado State on Feb. 26 and 35.1 percent in an 88-61 loss to Wyoming on Feb. 28.
But, Utah hasn't given up much on the defensive end either. In the last six games, Utah's opponents have averaged just 40.0 percent shooting from the field. Saint Louis managed to convert only 38.1 percent of its field goals against the Utes on Thursday.
