The University of Utah women's softball team defeated in-state rival Utah State, 9-1 and 8-0, at Ute Field, improving their overall record to 19-15. Utah State dropped to 10-21 on the season.
In game one, senior Sunny Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Teammate Lyndsey Trevis hit a bomb in the bottom of the fourth inning, and sophomore Molly McLean went 2-for-3 with one run. Nikki Hayhurst and Michele Larsen each had two hits in the game. Kristin Arbogast (17-12) recorded the win for the Utes, pitching six innings, giving up only three hits, one run one walk and struck out six.
For the Aggies, Tiffany Pugmire, Heather Curtis and Sandy Taylor each had one hit. Kristin Hommel (4-9) took the loss for Utah State, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits, six runs, three walks and struck out two.
In game two, Utah had nine hits, five walks and only two strike outs against the Aggies. Sunny Smith led the way with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Smith was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBI in the game. Senior Stacy O'Farrell went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lisa Hashimoto-Hall, Molly McLean, Jenny Monson, Lyndsey Trevis and Nicole Wilkinson each had a hit in game two. Arbogast upped her record to 18-12 overall, pitching four innings, giving up five hits, zero runs and zero walks. Teammate Jeanette Herbert came in for the last inning, holding the Aggies to only one walk, zero runs and zero hits.
Tiffany Pugmire led Utah State with two hits. Amy Settlemier recorded the loss for the Aggies. She is now 2-3 overall.
Coming Up: On Fri., Mar. 31, the Utes head to San Diego, Calif. to open up Mountain West Conference play. Utah will face the Aztecs in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (PST). Utah travels to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on the Rebels of UNLV on Sun., Apr. 2 in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. (PST). Utah will take on Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. at 2:00 p.m. (DH) (MST) on Fri., Apr. 7.
