SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team downed instate rival Weber State by a 7-0 margin on Thursday night. The win improved the Utes' record to 7-10 overall and 4-1 at home at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Wildcats fell to 9-9 on the season.
Utah rushed out to a scorching start, dominating the three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take the early lead. The wins were led by Nicholas Yip and Kevin Zenger who downed Corie Scheepers and Alex Tran, 8-4.
In singles play, the Utes slammed through the Wildcats taking all six matches. The only match to be drawn into a third set was at the No. 2 position where David Mercier outlasted Corrie Scheepers, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
Utah continues its play next week in Provo, where the Utes will take on BYU. The Cougars already defeated Utah once this year by a 4-3 spread on Mar. 3, in Salt Lake City.
