GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Utah baseball team is 1-2 against Mesa State after splitting a double header 1-1 today. The Utes lost the first game 3-6, but came back to defeat the Mavericks 19-4 in the second game.
In the first game, Mesa State jumped to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the third. Utah didn't put points on the board until the fourth inning when the scored two runs on a home run by third baseman Mike Goff. Utah gave up two more runs to the Mavericks in the bottom of the fourth and was only able to score one run in the sixth with a solo home run by Jed Chrisman. The Utes lost the match scoring three runs on six hits with three errors. Mesa State scored six runs on six hits with no errors.
Jared Cavaness picks up the loss for Utah bringing his season record to 1-3. The senior pitched all six innings of the game facing 25 batters, giving up six hits and striking out four.
Utah rallied back for the second game, pounding the Mavericks 19-4. Once again, Mesa State jumped to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning. Utah came back to score seven in the top of the second. First baseman Nate Weese started off the batting brigade with a triple and Jake Shortino slammed a homer to score three runs. The Utes reloaded in the sixth inning scoring another nine runs. Freshman Donnie Saba cracked two home runs in the inning to score five runs for the Utes. Utah ended the game scoring three runs in the seventh when second baseman Adam Castleton crushed his third home run of the season.
Jon Lewis earned the win pitching 3.2 innings of the game. The junior allowed two hits and struck out four batters in the game. The win brings his season record to 2-0.
Utah is now 7-11 as they head into the final day of play against the Mavericks. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow.
