COLUMBUS, Ga. -
The Utah softball team put on a good showing at the prestigious NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Columbus, Ga., March 3-5, finishing with a 2-3 record to improve its season mark to 10-10.
Utah, one of 25 teams invited to the tournament, opened tourney play with a 1-0 upset of Florida on March 3. Later in the day, the Utes met No. 1 ranked Washington for the second time of the year and lost for a second time, this time 8-0. The next day, the Utes bounced back to beat Illinois-Chicago 5-3, before falling to Cal State Northridge 2-0. On the final day of competition, Florida evened the score by edging Utah 4-2.
Ute ace Kristin Arbogast improved her record to 9-7 by going 2-1 at the Lead-Off Classic. Arbogast pitched a four-hit shutout against Florida and won an extra inning decision against Illinois-Chicago. She threw a five-hitter in Utah's 2-0 loss to Cal State Northridge. Jeanette Herbert was tagged with the loss in Utah's other two games.
Lisa Hashimoto-Hall led Utah at the plate, batting .462 (6-13) in the five games.
