SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team is 16-22 with a 6-9 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes rank fourth in the conference behind New Mexico (12-2), Brigham Young (10-5) and San Diego State (8-7).
Schedule Change
Due to scheduling conflicts with the Salt Lake Buzz, all remaining Utah baseball games will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field. Admission is free to U. students with a student body card. Tickets can be purchased at the Franklin Covey box office. Adult tickets are $4 and children tickets are $3.
Up this Week
The Utes resume conference play in a three-game series against San Diego State April 13-15. Thursday, Friday and Saturday's games all begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be played at Franklin Covey Field.
A Quick Look at San Diego State
The Aztecs are third in the Mountain West with an 8-7 conference record. SDSU is 20-21 on the season. San Diego State is batting .314 as a team and post a 5.41 ERA. The Aztecs took two games from the Utes earlier in the season, winning 20-1 and 8-6. Utah claimed one victory over San Diego State 7-6.
Amazing Feat
First baseman Nate Weese tied a Utah team record hitting three back-to-back home runs, including a grand slam, in Utah's 15-10 victory over Southern Utah yesterday. Weese hit 4-for-4 in the game, also pounding a double. He scored three runs in the contest and 10 RBI. The game boosts Weese to lead the team with nine home runs and 37 RBI. He posts a .309 batting average and is tied for first on the team with four triples. Weese is second in the league in home runs and triples. In the field, the sophomore leads the conference with 356 putouts and 35 double plays.
At the Plate
Centerfielder Sam Swenson leads the Utes with 16 doubles, 37 hits and is tied with four triples. He is second on the team with seven home runs and 31 RBI. The junior is third on the squad with a .338 batting average and posts a .648 slugging percentage. Swenson is second in the Mountain West Conference in doubles and triples and ranks third in home runs and slugging percentage.
On the Mound
Jared Cavaness is 3-5 making 11 appearances for the Utes, including three complete games. He has a 4.79 ERA and leads the team pitching 67.2 innings and 36 strikeouts. The senior leads the conference with 11 games started. He ranks third in innings pitched, sixth in ERA and ninth with a .282 opposing batting average.
Ute Tidbits
Jed Chrisman leads the team with a .346 batting average. He is second with 47 hits and seven home runs. He posts a perfect 1.00 fielding percentage with 57 putouts and two assists.
Mike Goff is second on the team with a .341 batting average. He also has nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 25 RBI. He is second in the Mountain West with five sacrifice flies and fourth with 84 assists.
Pitcher Matt McAfee leads the Utes with a 3.50 ERA. He is 1-1 on the season making 12 appearances with 17 strikeouts. McAfee is tied for third in the conference with two runners picked off and is tied for seventh with seven games finished.
Second baseman Adam Castleton is second in the conference fielding 30 double plays and ranks fifth with 79 assists. He has a .972 fielding percentage including 60 putouts. At the plate, the sophomore has 34 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 20 RBI.
Catcher Donald Hawes is tied for second in the Mountain West with 14 runners caught stealing. He is second on the team with 165 putouts and ranks ninth in the league.
Shortstop Rob Stuart is tied for fifth-place in the Mountain West with 80 putouts. He has 34 hits including four doubles and a pair of triples and home runs. He has 15 RBI.
Pitcher Mitch Maio is second for the Utes with a 3.57 ERA and 33 strikeouts. He leads the team with 16 appearances and has a 2-1 record. Maio is fourth in in the conference with 10 games finished and 16 games in relief.
Freshman Donnie Saba is second on the team with 11 doubles. He has 28 hits and two home runs. In leftfield, Saba has a .908 fielding percentage from 48 putouts and two assists.
