ALBUQUERQUE - Two and a half weeks after Utah defeated the Cougars on their home courts, BYU came back to win a more meaningful match on Thursday in the first round of the Mountain West Conference men's tennis tournament. BYU blanked the Utes, 4-0.
From the get-go, the Cougars had the edge, taking the two necessary doubles matches to take the doubles point. No. 1 slotted Damien Ward and Gert Vilms (BYU) defeated David Mercier and Trevor Ferguson (UU), 8-4, followed by Carlos Lozano and Anton Rudjuk (BYU) at No. 2 who slipped past Nikolas Yip and Kevin Zenger (UU), 9-8.
There was more of the same in the singles matches. BYU won the first three matches and won the contest. At No. 1, Damien Ward (BYU) defeated Ashley Dyer (UU), 6-1, 7-5. The No. 2 match displayed Carlos Lozano (BYU) downing David Mercier (UU), 6-4, 7-5, and Gert Vilms (BYU) edged senior Trevor Ferguson (UU),6-4, 7-6 (5) in the No. 3 match.
The Utes dropped to 8-14 on the year, while BYU improve to 11-9. The Cougars will go on to face the winner of the San Diego State vs. Air Force match while Utah will enter the consolation bracket.
