SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team is 13-20 with a 4-8 Mountain West Conference record. The Utes dropped three games to conference leaders New Mexico over the weekend to rank them third in the league. Utah is 4-3 at home including a three-game sweep over UNLV and two wins over Mesa State.
Schedule Change
All home games for the rest of the season will begin at 12:00 p.m. (MST). The Utah baseball team plays at Franklin Covey Field, home of the Salt Lake Buzz. The Utes and the Buzz are scheduled to play back-to-back games in the stadium this season. To ensure proper preparation time between games, all Utah games have been rescheduled to begin at noon, with the exclusion of a double header played against Southern Utah Tues., April 11, which will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Ute Travel
Utah travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play a three-game conference series against Air Force, April 7-9. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's game begins at 1:00 p.m. And Sunday's game starts at 12:00 p.m. All games will be played at Falcon Field.
A Quick Look at Air Force
The Falcons are 16-16 on the season and rank fifth in the Mountain West with a 2-7 conference record. Air Force owns one win over UNLV and Brigham Young while taking three losses from San Diego State and two >from BYU. Two games of the UNLV-Air Force three-game series were canceled over the weekend due to snow. Air Force leads the Mountain West with a .332 team batting average and is second in the league with a 5.30 ERA.
Last season, the Utes only played the Falcons in one game winning 12-1. Air Force finished the 1999 season with a 19-32 record and a 5-20 conference mark to finish 11th in the Western Athletic Conference.
Utes in the Mountain West
Utah ranks second in the conference with a .956 fielding percentage, including fielding 24 double plays. The Utes are fourth in the league with a 6.13 ERA. Utah leads the Mountain West with 35 home runs and ranks third with 12 triples.
On the Mound
Senior Jared Cavaness posts a 4.52 ERA. He has made 10 appearances, including three complete games. He has pitched a team high 61.2 innings and leads the team with 32 strikeouts. Cavaness maintains a .276 opposing batting average. In the Mountain West, he ranks third in innings pitched, fifth with 10 games started, sixth in ERA and eighth in opponent batting average.
Sophomore Mitch Maio is 2-1 this season with a 4.12 ERA. The hurler leads the team with 13 appearances. He is second on the team with 28 strikeouts and keeps a .219 opponent batting average. Maio ranks fourth in the league with eight games finished. He is also tied for fourth in appearances and ranks sixth with 13 games of relief.
At the Plate
Junior Sam Swenson leads the team with 40 hits, 13 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 24 RBI. The centerfielder has a .320 batting average and a .640 slugging percentage. Swenson is second in the Mountain West in home runs and triples. He ranks fourth in slugging percentage, total bases (80) and sacrifice bunts (3) and is 10th with 125 at bats. He is tied for first in the league with a perfect 1.00 fielding percentage with 75 putouts.
Junior Mike Goff leads the Utes with a .328 batting average. Against New Mexico, he posted a team high three-game batting average of .500, going 5-of-10. He is second on the team with 39 hits. The third baseman also ranks third with eight doubles and 19 RBI. Goff leads the team with five stolen bases. In the conference, he ranks sixth with 74 assists.
Sophomore Nate Weese is tied for first on the team with three triples. The first baseman posts a .279 batting average. He has 36 hits, six doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI. In the field, he has a .979 fielding percentage including 318 putouts and 15 assists. Weese leads the Mountain West in chances (341), putouts and double plays (30).
Utah Tidbits
Rightfielder Jed Chrisman is second on the team with a .327 batting average. The junior has 37 hits, five doubles, one triple, five home runs and 22 RBI.
Pitcher Matt McAfee leads the Utes with a 3.29 ERA. He has made 10 appearances for Utah pitching 13.2 innings and striking out 12 batters. He ranks fifth in the conference with seven games finished and in runners picked off, with two.
Catcher Donald Hawes ranks third in the league with 12 runners caught stealing. He is also ranked 10th with 136 putouts. At the plate, Hawes is fourth on the team with three home runs.
Second baseman Adam Castleton is third on the team with eight doubles and four home runs. He has 29 hits and 16 RBI. In the Mountain West, Castleton is third fielding 23 double plays and fourth with 75 assists.
Pitcher Jon Lewis is 2-2 this season with a 4.63 ERA. The junior has made nine appearances for Utah, starting two games. He has pitched 23.1 innings, striking out 19 batters.
