PROVO, Utah - Utah took four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to post a 5-2 win over Brigham Young in men's tennis on Wednesday.
Utah's David Mercier posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Damien Ward at No. 1 singles. Also winning in straight set for the Utes were Daniel Carlson (6-3, 6-2) over David White, and David Laverty (6-2, 7-6) over Anton Rudjuk. Kevin Zenger posted a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over the Cougars' Michael Faust.
Trevor Ferguson and Mercier gave the Utes a 9-8 win over Ward and Gert Vilms 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Utah's Ashley Dyer and Laverty won at No. 3 singles.
This is the second consecutive season that the in-state rivals split their home and home series, with each team winning on the other's home court. BYU slipped past Utah 4-3 on March 3 in Salt Lake City.
Utah improved its record to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes play at Fresno State on Sunday.
