Albuquerque, N.M. -
The University of Utah softball team split a doubleheader with New Mexico at Lobo Field, Sun., Apr. 9. The Lobos won the first game 7-3, and the Utes took the second game, 9-3 in the late game. Utah moves to 24-18 overall, 5-3 in the MWC. The Lobos are now 27-12 overall, 5-1 in the Mountain West.
Game one saw two of the conference's best pitchers square off as Utah's Kristin Arbogast and UNM's Danielle Cassara took the hill. The game went off as expected for the first four innings as neither team scored. Cassara retired the first 11 Utes before Sunny Smith doubled in the fourth. The Lobos broke the game open in their half of the fifth as Marianna Fenelli doubled in a run and then Kathy Moore drove in two more with a single. The Lobos tacked on four more in the sixth with Moore again doing the damage with a two-run double. Cassara held the Utes without an earned run until the seventh, when a mix up in the infield allowed two runs to score with two outs.
In the second game, Cassara started the second game of the doubleheader, but teammate Kathy Moore came on in relief early on. Senior Sunny Smith went 4-for-4 in the game with two home runs and a double to help seal the Lobos' fate. New Mexico did not help its own cause as it stranded eight runners in the game.
