Utes at a Glance
The Utah baseball team finishes the 2000 season with a 25-28 record and a 15-15 Mountain West Conference mark. The Utes finish third in the conference behind New Mexico, San Diego State and tied with Brigham Young. In its last conference series, Utah dominated Air Force 2-1 winning 7-5 and 8-3, while losing 9-8.
Up this week
The Utes travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the inaugural Mountain West Conference Tournament May 17-20. Utah enters the tournament as the fourth seed and will play No. 3 seed Brigham Young on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Utes in the Mountain West
Utah is second in the conference with a .953 fielding percentage including 45 double plays. Utah is second in the Mountain West with only 93 errors. At the plate, the Utes lead the league with 137 doubles, 27 triples, 68 home runs and a .518 team slugging percentage. On the mound, Utah is fourth with a 6.32 team ERA.
Season Highlights
Ute head coach Tim Esmay reached a 100-win milestone this season ending the year with a 106-110-1 career coaching record.
Senior pitcher Brandon Page, who set two Utah records as a freshman in 1997 with 28 appearances and eight saves, set another pair of team career records with 68 appearances and nine saves.
First baseman Nate Weese tied the Utah single game record hitting three home runs against Southern Utah.
Centerfielder Sam Swenson set new Utah season and career hitting records pounding seven triples in the 2000 season to boost his career total to 10. He also holds the team season record with 229 at bats (1998).
Second baseman Adam Castleton set the Utah record with 42 base on balls and tied the team single game record with four base on balls against San Diego State.
Pitcher Jared Cavaness set a new Utah record with 16 games started.
The 2000 Utes also broke a team record with a .517 season slugging percentage (previously .461, 1985).
Swingin' Swenson
Centerfielder Sam Swenson leads the team with 20 doubles, seven triples and a .672 slugging percentage. He is second on the team with a .343 batting average, 70 hits, 11 home runs and 42 RBI. Against UNLV, Swenson led the Utes with a .583 three-game batting average. The junior slammed three triples a double and a home run in the series.
In the Mountain West Conference, Swenson leads the league in triples, ranks third in slugging percentage and is fourth in home runs. He is fifth in doubles and sixth with 55 runs scored and 137 total bases.
Wicked Weese
First baseman Nate Weese leads Utah with 13 home runs, 73 hits and 60 RBI. He has a .325 batting average, 15 doubles and is second on the team with six triples. He also posts a .641 slugging percentage. Weese tied a Utah team record hitting three back-to-back home runs, including a grand slam, in Utah's 15-10 victory over Southern Utah. Weese hit 4-for-4 in the game, also pounding a double. He scored three runs in the contest and 10 RBI. In Utah's 12-4 trouncing of San Diego State, Weese kept the momentum hitting 4-for-5 including three doubles and triple. He scored three runs and six RBI in the game.
In the conference, Weese is second in both home runs, triples and runs batted in (58). He is third with 217 at bats and fourth in batting average. In the field, he leads the league with 548 chances, 507 putouts and 50 double plays.
Poundin' Pannier
Sophomore Brit Pannier leads the Utes with a .347 batting average. The designated hitter has 58 hits, 14 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 26 RBI. Against Brigham Young, Pannier led the Utes with a .642 three-game batting average. He pounded three doubles and two triples in the game to score four runs and five RBI. In left field, Pannier is the only athlete in the Mountain West Conference maintaining a perfect 1.00 fielding percentage.
On the Mound
Pitcher Jared Cavaness leads the Utes with 101.2 innings pitched and 51 strikeouts. He has made 16 appearances for Utah, including four complete games, and has a 5.75 ERA. Against Air Force, Cavaness pitched the first 6.1 innings of the game facing 32 batters, allowing four earned runs and striking out five batters.
Cavaness is second in the conference in innings pitched, is third with 16 games started and ranks seventh with a .299 opponent batting average.
Utah Tidbits
Third baseman Mike Goff is third on the team with a .340 batting average and is second with 18 doubles. He has 67 hits, one triple, four home runs and 37 RBI. He ranks seventh in doubles in the Mountain West Conference and is tied for second with six sacrifice flies. Goff also lists eighth in the league with 117 assists.
Matt McAfee leads the Ute pitching squad with a 3.34 ERA. He has made 18 appearances four Utah throwing 29.2 innings and delivering 27 strikeouts. McAfee is tied for fifth in the conference with two saves.
Catcher Donald Hawes is second in the conference with 18 runners caught stealing and is tied for fifth with 10 home runs. The sophomore is also fourth with 310 chances, lists sixth with 252 putouts and is 10th with a .984 fielding percentage. At the plate, Hawes also has 40 hits, seven doubles and 34 RBI.
Junior Jed Chrisman has a .325 batting average including 63 hits. He also has 15 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 40 RBI. In rightfield, Chrisman posts a .989 fielding percentage from 83 putouts, three assists and only one error. He ranks fifth in the conference in fielding percentage and is tied for third with five sacrifice flies.
Pitcher Benson Barrera is second in the team with a 3.70 ERA. He has made 11 appearances for Utah including three complete games and has pitched 24.1 innings. He has 13 strikeouts and is 1-1.
Adam Castleton is second in the conference with 42 base on balls and 37 double plays. He also lists fifth with 123 assists. The second baseman has a .272 batting average with 50 hits. He has 14 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 31 RBI.
Pitcher Mitch Maio is third for the Utes with a 3.94 ERA. He is 3-1 this season and leads Utah with 20 appearances. He has thrown 32 innings and is second in the team with 44 strikeouts. He also maintains the team low .212 opponent batting average. Maio is eighth in the conference with two saves.
Shortstop Rob Stuart is seventh in the Mountain West with 121 assists and ranks 10th with 25 double plays. Stuart has 40 hits, nine doubles, two triples, three home runs and 27 RBI.
