SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team is 21-16 with a 11-13 Mountain West Conference record to rank fourth in the league. The Utes dominated Brigham Young 2-1 over the weekend to boost their record. Utah defeated BYU 12-11 and 13-9 while giving up a 10-5 loss. The Cougars are third in the conference behind New Mexico and San Diego State.
Up this Week
The Utes travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to take-on the New Mexico Lobos April 5-7. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday's games start at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be played at Lobo Field.
Utah in the Mountain West
The Utes rank second in the Mountain West with a .954 fielding percentage. The Utes have 1161 putouts, 508 assists and are second in the conference with only 81 errors. Utah also ranks fourth in the field with 38 double plays. At the plate, Utah leads the conference with 24 triples and is second with 55 home runs. The Utes also rank third in the league with 804 total bases and a .504 slugging percentage. On the mound, Utah is fifth with a 6.23 ERA. The Utes are second with nine runners picked off and tied for second with a .307 opponent batting average.
A Quick Look at New Mexico
The Lobos lead the Mountain West Conference with a 19-5 record and a 31-16 season mark. New Mexico also leads the conference with a .965 fielding percentage, is third with a .333 team batting average, but ranks sixth with a 6.57 ERA. In their last match-up, the Lobos swept the Utes 3-0, 14-11 and 7-3. New Mexico's five losses include three to San Diego State (24-21, 4-3, 13-3 and 4-5) and Brigham Young (20-2).
Poundin' Pannier
Designated hitter Brit Pannier led the Utes against Brigham Young last weekend with a .642 three-game batting average. The sophomore pounded three doubles and two triples in the series, including the game winning double in Utah's 12-11 victory. He also scored four runs and five RBI. The feat boosts him to lead Utah with a .359 season batting average. He has 51 hits, 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 20 RBI. His performance also ranks him seventh in the conference in triples.
Swingin' Swenson
Junior Sam Swenson leads Utah with 19 doubles and seven triples. He is second on the team 63 hits and .348 batting average. He also ranks second on the team with seven triples and nine home runs. The centerfielder is third with 36 RBI. In conference rankings, Swenson leads the Mountain West in triples and is second with a .680 slugging percentage. He ranks third in the league in doubles, fifth with 50 runs scored, sixth with 181 at bats and ranks eighth in hits and a .439 on base percentage.
Against UNLV, Swenson led the Utes with a .583 three-game batting average. The junior slammed three triples a double and a home run in the series.
Wicked Weese
First baseman Nate Weese leads Utah and ranks second in the Mountain West with 11 home runs. He also leads the team with 53 RBI and 64 hits. He is second for the Utes with six triples, 13 doubles and a .339 batting average. In the conference, Weese also ranks second in triples and 51 runs batted in. He is fifth with a .646 slugging percentage, 122 total bases and 189 at bats. He is seventh with four sacrifice flies. In the field, Weese leads the league with 451 putouts, 486 chances and 44 double plays.
Weese tied a Utah team record hitting three back-to-back home runs, including a grand slam, in Utah's 15-10 victory over Southern Utah. Weese hit 4-for-4 in the game, also pounding a double. He scored three runs in the contest and 10 RBI. In Utah's 12-4 trouncing of San Diego State, Weese kept the momentum hitting 4-for-5 including three doubles and triple. He scored three runs and six RBI in the game.
On the Mound
Jared Cavaness leads Utah pitching 89.1 innings and 44 strikeouts. The senior has started 14 games for Utah and pitched four complete games. He is 4-6 on the season with a 5.24 ERA. In the Mountain West, Cavaness is second innings pitched. He also ranks fourth in games started, fifth with a .286 opponent batting average and seventh in ERA.
Sophomore Mitch Maio is second on the team with a 3.68 ERA and a 3-1 record. He also leads Utah with 19 appearances and ranks second with 43 strikeouts. He has pitched 29.1 innings of relief for the Utes. In the conference, Maio ranks seventh in appearances and with two saves.
Maio earned his second save of the season pitching three innings in Utah's 7-6 victory over UNLV. The sophomore faced 11 batters giving up no hits and striking out five at the plate.
