Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's softball team split a doubleheader with Brigham Young, losing the first game, 7-4 in 12 innings and winning the second game 7-5, at home in a MWC match-up on Sat., May 6. Utah moves to 36-21 overall, 15-5 in the MWC. Brigham Young is now 16-25 overall, 7-13 in MWC play.
In game one, sophomore Molly McLean went 3-for-6 with two runs. Freshman Niki Hayhurst went 2-for-5 with a double and one run. Senior Jenny Monson went 1-for-4 with a home run, one run and two RBI. Kristin Arbogast took the loss for the Utes, pitching 12 innings, giving up 11 hits, seven runs, one earned run, five walks and struck out a season high 11 batters. Utah totaled 10 hits in 46 at bats with four runs and two RBI.
The Cougars were led by freshman Cassie Martin. Martin was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Jackie Ellis was 2-for-6 with a double, one run and one RBI. Maryon Dewitt recorded the win for the Cougars, she is now 8-9 overall. Brigham Young had 11 hits in 44 at bats with seven runs and seven RBI.
In game two, senior Sunny Smith was a perfect 2-for-2 with a home run, one run and three RBI. Smith set Utah's single-season record for home runs again and the record is now 17 home runs. Molly McLean went 2-for-3 with two runs, while teammate Michele Larsen was 1-for-3 with a home run, one run and three RBI. Utah had seven hits in 24 at bats, with seven runs and six RBI. Sophomore Jeannette Herbert recorded the win for the Utes and Kristin Arbogast got the save. Herbert is now 2-3 overall and Arbogast is 34-17 overall.
Brigham Young's Megan Johnson was a perfect 2-for-2, while teammate Angie Christiansen was 1-for-3 with a double, and three RBI. The Cougars had nine hits in 29 at bats, with five runs and five RBI. Meghann Pricer took the loss for the Cougars. She is now 4-11 overall.
Coming Up: Utah is the host of the 2000 Inaugural McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Championships which will be held May 11-13 at Ute Field. Game times are all day.
