SALT LAKE CITY -
The preseason polls and publications are starting to roll off the presses and Utah is scoring well on both the team and individual fronts. In its annual preseason publication, Lindy's picked Utah to win the 2000 Mountain West Conference title, followed by Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, Air Force, Wyoming, San Diego State and New Mexico.
Lindy's picked Ute senior defensive back Andre Dyson as the MWC Defensive Player of the Year and chose him No. 1 in its "Top Ten Talent" section. Senior wide receiver/return specialist Steve Smith was cited as the No. 4 talent.
Named to Lindy's preseason all-conference first team were senior offensive lineman Sam White, Smith as the all-purpose player, senior linebacker Kautai Olevao and defensive back Dyson. Utes on the second team were junior wide receiver Cliff Russell, junior offensive lineman Doug Kaufusi, senior defensive lineman Ma'ake Kemoeatu and senior defensive back Jason Potter.
Collegefootballnews.com put Smith on its All-America team, naming him a second-team All-America return specialist.
