Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the UNLV Rebels in a quick three game match (15-5, 15-4, 15-8) at Crimson Court on Sat., Sept. 23. Utah improves to 10-1 overall, 2-0 in the MWC. UNLV falls to 0-11 on the season, 0-2 in the MWC.
Junior McKelle Stilson led the Utes with 10 kills for an impressive .600 hitting percentage. Freshman Kim Turner totaled nine kills for a .357 hitting percentage and five total blocks. Teammate Katrena Ellett added nine kills, while Lucie Turkova posted 29 assists and led the Utes with eight digs. Senior Brooke Barton also had eight digs and Alisa Geddes added seven digs. As a team Utah posted a .233 hitting percentage and six total team blocks.
For the Rebels, Leiana Oswald totaled eight kills for a .368 hitting percentage and six digs. Blair Wilkes and Christina Kirschner each had six kills. Maria Julia Goes posted 26 assists and teammate Amber Graham added six digs. UNLV managed a .031 hitting percentage and added just four total team blocks in the match.
"This was the match that I've been most happy with all season," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "I think it was the most consistent execution we've had all season. I thought Lucie (Turkova) set a really nice match and it was the best she has set so far. We really took care of business and I am very pleased with the way we played tonight."
UP NEXT: The Utes hit the road on Fri., Sept. 29, taking on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. (MST in Laramie, Wyo. On Sat., Sept. 30, Utah travels to Fort Collins, Colo. to face the No. 7 ranked Colorado State Rams at 7:00 p.m. (MST).
