SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-2-1) earned its first win of the season 3-0 over Weber State (0-4) at Ute Field.
After going 0-2-1 in the first three games, all of which were overtime, Utah controlled this one from the get-go. Utah out aggressed the Wildcats, attempting more than double Weber's shots 25-12. Junior Amy Kofoed garnered two goals in the game. The first came to put Utah out front in the 26th minute, when she scored on a shot rebounded from an attempt by sophomore Katie Tate. Her second came in the 63rd minute, when sophomore Megan Maxwell fed her 15-yards inside midfield. Kofoed blasted the half field shot into the upper left of the goal. Tate posted her fourth goal of the year in the 27th minute on an assist by sophomore Shauna Gurr. Goalkeeper Courtney Hills earned her first shutout of the year, rejecting 10 of 11 Wildcat shots.
"I think the team came out today and played really hard," said Coach Amy Winslow. "Intensity was our goal today and we had no let downs. We scored a goal and came right back with another one. It was good to break the ice."
"In the locker room we grouped up by position and established some goals we needed to accomplish," said Kofoed. "Number one was to play 90 minutes. Number two was to communicate, and the third goal was to win."
Utah hopes to take the momentum on the road at Arizona State and Arizona Fri, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. and Sun., Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. respectively.
