Salt Lake City - The No. 18th ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team shut-down the San Diego State Aztecs in three games, 30-19, 30-18, 30-17, on Sat., Oct. 13, at Crimson Court. Utah improves to 11-4 overall, 5-2 in the MWC. San Diego State falls to 10-6 on the season, 4-3 in MWC play.
Junior Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with 12 kills for a .455 hitting percentage and 14 digs. Teammate Kim Turner notched 10 kills for a .300 hitting percentage and eight total blocks. Adrianne Drake had 10 digs and five total blocks, while Alisa Geddes and Katrena Ellett each totaled seven kills. Jackie Morrill posted 23 assists and freshman Kelsie Kartchner notched 10 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted a .266 hitting percentage and out-blocked the Aztecs 14.5 to 9.0.
For the Aztecs, Aspen McPartland totaled six kills and seven digs. Melissa Wright posted 19 assists, respectively. San Diego State hit for just -.018 in the match.
"We worked on improving our blocking this week and tonight's match was huge for us in terms of that," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "I think they (SDSU) were flat from their match with BYU, but we kept the pressure on and they couldn't recover. Our blockers did a great job tonight. "
UP NEXT: On Tues., Oct. 16, Utah will host the Weber State Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Fri., Oct. 19 at Crimson Court at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Oct. 23 Utah faces the Utah State Aggies at home at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back on the road on Fri., Oct. 26 vs. New Mexico and on Sat., Oct. 27 vs. Air Force. Match times are set for a 7:00 p.m. start. On Fri., Nov. 2, Utah will host the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the Colorado State Rams on Sat., Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Crimson Court.
