Salt Lake City - The No. 18th ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team shut-down the Weber State Wildcats in three games, 30-20, 30-18, 30-21, on Tues., Oct. 16, at Crimson Court. Utah improves to 12-4 overall, 5-2 in the MWC. Weber State falls to 10-7 on the season.
Junior Katrena Ellett and senior McKelle Stilson racked up 11 kills each to lead the Utes past the Wildcats. Ellett hit for .500, while Stilson hit for a career-high .846. Sophomore Kim Turner notched 10 kills for an impressive .750 hitting percentage. Senior Lenka Urbanova totaled nine digs and Sylva Strzinkova added seven. Jackie Morrill posted 30 assists and freshman Kelsie Kartchner notched 19 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted an effective .462 hitting percentage. The school record for hitting percentage is .463 in a three-game match and the Utes just missed it by a very slim margin. Utah out-blocked the Wildcats, 8.0 to 5.0 in the match.
For the Wildcats, Natasha Widdison totaled eight kills for a .312 hitting percentage. Stephanie Kropushek added six kills and four digs. Laura Robinson posted 15 assists and Lacey Rice had 11 assists, respectively. Weber State hit for .157 in the match.
"I'm really pleased with how we are winning these matches," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "We are keeping the pressure on and doing some things on our side of the net that is helping us to close out matches. We are clicking as a team right now and I am extremely pleased with our play in general."
UP NEXT: The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Fri., Oct. 19 at Crimson Court at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Oct. 23 Utah faces the Utah State Aggies at home at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back on the road on Fri., Oct. 26 vs. New Mexico and on Sat., Oct. 27 vs. Air Force. Match times are set for a 7:00 p.m. start. On Fri., Nov. 2, Utah will host the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the Colorado State Rams on Sat., Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Crimson Court.
