SALT LAKE CITY -
After dropping the first two conference games of the season, the University of Utah women's soccer team got back on track with a 2-0 victory over New Mexico on Sunday. The Lobos came into the match in first place in the Mountain West Conference standings and were coming off an upset over BYU earlier in the week.
Utah was on the attack early, taking 12 shots in the first period and holding New Mexico to four. In the 36th minute, the Utes scored the game's first goal off of a Shauna-Gurr Bingham shot. Katie Tate and Amy Kofoed were credited with assists. The match would remain scoreless throughout the final nine minutes of the half, as Utah took a 1-0 lead to the break.
A tough defensive battle ensued into the second half. The Utes controlled the ball throughout the period, taking 12 shots and limiting the Lobos to one. Lobo goalkeeper, Shelly Hammock, had six saves in the second period, holding Utah scoreless early. With less than two minutes left to play, Gurr-Bingham scored her second goal of the game off of an Esther Imotan assist to give the Utes a 2-0 win.
"We played great in the first half," said Utah coach Amy Winslow. "New Mexico turned up their intensity in the second period, but we played a very smart game and got the win."
Lynnsey Asay earned the win for the Utes at the goalkeeper position, improving her record to 5-1 on the season. It was Asay's fourth shutout of the year. Hammock took the loss for New Mexico, but finished the game with 10 saves.
The win improved Utah to 7-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the MWC. New Mexico fell to 3-9-2 overall and 2-1-1 in MWC play. Utah is yet to be beaten at home this season with a 5-0 record at Ute Field. The Utes will host Wyoming on Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and Air Force on Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m.
