PORTLAND, Oregon - After a four-match win streak, the Utah women's soccer team fell to third-ranked Portland, 2-0, on Sunday. The Utes hopes of ending Portland's nine-match streak were tampered early. Less than a minute into the game, Lisa Casagrande scored an unassisted goal to give the Pilots an early lead.
Casagrande's shot from the left wing hit Utah goalkeeper Courtney Hills' hands and managed to bounce just over the goal line. Just after the 11-minute mark, Portland would score again on a Christine Sinclair goal.
The match would be scoreless for the final 78 minutes, giving Portland their tenth straight win and fifth consecutive shutout. The Utes were limited to seven shots and three shots on goal, while Portland had 15 shots and 7 SOG. After giving up the early goals, Hills had five saves and stopped the Pilots from scoring again.
The loss drops the Utes to 6-3-0 on the season, while Portland improves to 10-1-0.
Utah will begin conference play on the road with San Diego State on Oct. 11. On Oct. 13, they will travel to UNLV to take on the Rebels.
