SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team has signed three California high school seniors to national letters of intent. The announcement came Friday from head coach Rick Majerus. The Runnin' Utes have landed Richard Chaney, a 6-5, 180-pound wing player from Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles, Tim Drisdom, a 6-3, 195-pound point guard from Calvary Chapel High School in Downey, and Bryant Markson, a 6-7, 190-pound forward from Monrovia High School. All three are rated among the top 100 high school seniors in the country by ESPN.com.
"I think it's a very good class for three reasons," said Majers. "This recruiting class overall is particularly appealing to us as coaches and to the Ute fans because, first of all, we have good students that we are going to be bringing in who are committed to their education and will ultimately receive a degree here. Secondly, they are very nice young guys with very good family situations and devoted parents, and that has been been a plus for our program over the years. Finally, and more important than anything else on the basketball court, these are guys who have come from winning programs. They've all competed in the state tournament, and very rarely do you get a class where everyone has been a competitor in the state tournament in their junior years, and some of them even in their sophomore years."
Chaney averaged 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists during his junior season. He was a first team all-league and first team all-CIF selection last season. Chaney also led Verbum Dei to a conference championship and the third round of the state playoffs. Chaney is listed 82nd in the nation among high school seniors by ESPN.com. He chose Utah over Arizona and USC.
"Richard is an excellent prospect," raved Majeurs. "He can play three positions. He reminds me of (former Milwuakee Bucks' player) Paul Pressey defensively. He has the ability to run the floor. He'll provide an athletic dimension to our team and he can score in a variety of ways. I'm excited about the potential that he brings and the fact that he comes from a terrific school and a fine program like Verbum Dei. That will enable to acclimate himself to the college situation quicker."
Drisdom averaged 25 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as a junior last season at Calvary Chapel, which went 28-5 and won the Southern Section V-AA championship. He also shot 45 percent from three-point range and 81 percent at the free throw line. He is a three-time Academy League MVP, a two-time CIF Division V Player of the Year and a Wooden Award winner in Division V.
Entering his senior season, Drisdom is already Calvary Chapel's all-time leader in points and assists. He is an honor student with a 3.7 grade-point average. Drisdom is ranked the 47th best senior overall and the 12th-best point guard by ESPN.com. Drisdom was also recruited by USC, Georgia Tech and Miami (Fla.).
"He has an excellent feel for the game," complimented Majerus. "Tim's success is going to be predicated on lowering his body fat and getting himself in good physical condition. His instincts are excellent. He's a good feeder and has a nice understanding of the game. He is a very good point guard to feed in transition, to draw and kick it, and to get the ball inside. It's hard to find guys who are able to do all of those three things. He's a committed player. If he gets himself in top condition, he's going to have a wonderful career."
Markson averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds and four assists last season for Monrovia High. He led the team to a 24-5 record overall and a 10-0 mark in league play. Monrovia also advanced to the final eight of the state tournament a year ago.
Markson is a two-time league MVP and was honored as the Player of the Year in the San Diego Valley in 2000-01. In addition, the honor student was named first team all-CIF Southern Section as a junior and second team as a sophomore. Markson is rated as the 34th-best senior overall and No. 7 among shooting guards by ESPN.com. Markson chose the Utes over Kansas, Arizona, Kentucky, USC, UCLA, New Mexico and Wyoming.
"Bryant is an outstanding athlete," commented Majerus. "He's very quick laterally. He has all the component parts except for strength. If he gets stronger and continues to improve his outside shooting, his potential is going to be great."
Chaney is one of the best players to come out of Verbum Dei High School since former Utah All-American Andre Miller, who is in his third year with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. Drisdom and Markson also have ties to Miller, playing for his former club team, the Los Angeles Rockfish.
Markson was unable to play last summer due to knee surgery, however, his rehabilitation is progressing well and it is anticipated that he will be cleared to play in mid-December. Drisdom had an outstanding summer. He led the prestigious ABCD Camp with 67 percent three-point shooting last July. Drisdom also had good showings at the Adidas Big Time Camp and the Fresno EBL Mats Tournament.
"I'm excited because two of them have the potential to become outstanding defenders," concluded Majerus. "It's very difficult to find a cerebral point guard. Plus, all the guys know each other and like each other, and have an understanding of the commitment we expect."
