LOOKING AT THE UTES
Utah heads to the University of Pacific after a tough series at Cal Poly last weekend. Last season the Tigers swept a double-header from the Utes.
Adam Castleton leads the Utes into Pacific with his .500 batting average. He is currently 5-for-10 with four doubles, three runs scored, and three RBI. Donald Hawes leads the team with four RBI. Nate Weese is second on the team with a .462 batting average and a .538 slugging percentage.
Matt McAfee, Mitch Maio and Sean Overholt all pitched scoreless baseball against the Mustangs. Combined the three threw 7.1 innings of shut-out work, mixing in seven strike outs to only four walks.
SCOUTING PACIFIC
The Pacific Tigers come into this series after taking two of three from Nevada. They won both games of a double-header on Friday, then lost the series finale on Saturday.
Offensively they are led by Richard Hackett and Octavio Amezquita. The two have combined for 12 hits in 27 at bats (.444). Hackett has also added two doubles and a triple.
On the mound they have a team ERA of 6.43. Their starters ERA is 12.00 while the bullpen is at 2.25. Matthew J. Pena leads the team, having not allowed a run in 4.2 innings of work.
LAST WEEKEND REWIND
Last weekend saw the Utes open the season 0-3, after three losses to Cal Poly. They were supposed to open on Friday night, but rain forced the season opener to a Saturday double-header. In the first game, the Utes saw a 4-3 lead turn to a 6-5 loss.
Game two saw Utah drop another lead, this time two different one-run margins. Cal Poly held the Utes without a hit over the final three innings. Adam Castleton was the bright spot for the Utes, finishing the two games 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three doubles.
Sunday the Utes dropped their third straight, again failing to hold a lead. This time though they battled from four runs down to force extra innings, only to allow a Mustang run in the bottom of the tenth.
Last season the Utes started 0-3, but then went on to win seven of their next eight.
UTAH TIDBITS
Adam Castleton got off to a hot start this season. He finished the Cal Poly series with a .500 batting average (5-for-10), including four doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored. He also leads the team with his .900 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage.
Nate Weese picked up this season right where he left off. In the series against Cal Poly, he finished with six hits and three RBI. He also added two runs scored and one double.
The Utes' bullpen got good work out of Matt McAfee, Mitch Maio and Sean Overholt. McAfee went 2.2 innings allowing no runs or hits, walking one and recording two strike outs.
Maio allowed only one walk in his 2.1 innings while adding five strike outs. He leads the team averaging 19.3 strike outs per nine innings.
Overholt didn't allow a run while he was on the mound. He finished the series with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing one hit and two walks.
HEAD COACH TIM ESMAY
Tim Esmay enters his fifth season as Utah's head baseball coach, and is looking to break new ground in the Mountain West Conference. The MWC is scaling back to the original building blocks of the Western Athletic Conference, giving the Utes a chance to reestablish themselves as a dominant conference foe. Esmay enters the season with a 107-112-1 overall record and a 57-61 career conference mark.
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started his coaching career as a graduate student at Arizona State. He stayed at ASU for five years as an assistant coach under Jim Brock and Jeff Pentland.
