Looking at the Utes
Utah heads to the Applebee's Baseball Fiesta on a five game winning streak. Ryan Bailey, Travis Palmer and Brett Lindsey should get starts in the series.
The Ute offense heads to Albuquerque on a roll. They scored 36 runs in the three game series at UCR, including 18 on Friday. They have 15 home runs in 10 games this season.
Scouting Missouri
Missouri is 1-1-1 on the season. They picked up a win over Loyola Marymount and lost to Pepperdine. Jayce Tingler, and Ryan Stegall lead the team with three hits apiece.
On the mound, Drew Kndicott pitched a complete game shutout against San Jose State in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie.
Scouting Nebraska
The Cornhuskers currently sit at 1-2 with their win coming against Lamar. Offensively they are led by Matt Hopper and John Cole. Hopper is 6-for-12 with three runs scored. Cole is 5-for-10 with three runs scored.
R.D. Spiehs, Shane Komine and Jamie Rodrigue made starts last weekend. Spiehs is 1-0 while Komine and Rodrigue are both 0-1.
Scouting Kansas State
After a 3-0 start, the Wildcats have dropped their last two, both to No. 3 LSU. Osmar Castillo leads the team with his .600 (12-20) batting average, while Josh Cavender and Nick Sorensen each have two home runs. Cavender has also driven in 10 runs.
Five Wildcat pitchers have an ERA of 3.86 or lower. Scott Tallman, Spencer Black and Kelvin Day are all at 0.00. Garrett Patterson and Luke Robertson are the two starters with an ERA under 7.00.
Last Weekend Rewind
Utah swept the UCR Highlanders with an offensive explosion. The Utes scored 36 runs in the three game series while hitting seven homers. They collected 49 hits, 20 of which went for extra bases.
On Friday they held off a late UCR rally to win 18-14. UCR scored seven times in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough. Mike Westfall led the way with four hits and four RBI.
Saturday saw the Utes rally twice to pick up the 8-7 win. Sam Swenson capped the rally with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Utes the 8-7 win.
Sunday they exploded for eight runs in the first inning while holding UCR to only one run. They scored two more in the ninth, winning the game 10-1.
Utah Tidbits
Utah scored at least one run in the first inning of every game against UCR. In the series they outscored the Highlanders 12-5 in the first inning.
Mike Westfall has at least one hit in nine of the 10 games this season. He opened the season with an eight game hitting streak before going 0-for-5 last Saturday. He followed that game up by going 4-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and an RBI.
With homers in the first two games of the UCR series, Sam Swenson had a four game home run streak. His four homers leads the team. In the games on Friday and Saturday he was a double away from hitting for the cycle.
Catcher Donald Hawes had five hits in the series, including a grand slam on Sunday. In the series he had six RBI and three runs scored.
With the five wins this season, head coach Tim Esmay is now five wins away from reaching .500 for his career. He needs 13 more to reach 125.
Head Coach Tim Esmay
Tim Esmay enters his fifth season as Utah's head baseball coach, and is looking to break new ground in the Mountain West Conference. The MWC is scaling back to the original building blocks of the Western Athletic Conference, giving the Utes a chance to reestablish themselves as a dominant conference foe. Esmay enters the season with a 107-112-1 overall record and a 57-61 career conference mark.
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started his coaching career as a graduate student at Arizona State. He stayed at ASU for five years as an assistant coach under Jim Brock and Jeff Pentland.
