LOOKING AT THE UTES
After dropping their first five games, the Utes have now won two straight. After going 2-for-37 against Cal Poly, the Ute outfielders responded against Pacific. Against Pacific they were 14-for-42, including four home runs, 12 runs scored and seven RBI.
Adam Castleton continues to be the Utes top hitter at .364. He also leads the team in doubles (4), walks (10), slugging percentage (.682) and on-base percentage (.588).
Travis Palmer has been the top Ute on the hill. In his first start of the season against Pacific, he went six innings allowing only three hits and zero runs.
The Utes currently lead the Mountain West Conference in nine offensive categories, including hits, doubles and home runs.
SCOUTING UC-RIVERSIDE
UCR comes into this series after going 2-1 over the weekend. They picked up wins over San deigo State (4-3) and The Citadel (12-0). Then they lost to Oklahoma State 17-0. Overall they have a record of 3-2.
The Highlanders offense is led by Randy Blood and Jimmy Anderson. Blood is hitting .476 (10-for-21) whie Anderson is at .471 (8-for-17). Blood also leads the team with three doubles.
On the mound George Caralejo is at 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He also leads the team with seven strike outs.
Julio Fernandez and Chris Smith should make starts in the series. Fernandez is 1-0 and Smith is 1-1.
LAST WEEKEND REWIND
The Utes opened with two losses against the Tigers. They lost the first game of the series 3-2 on Friday, after allowing Pacific a run in the seventh and eighth. They then lost the first game of a double-header on Saturday 8-5.
In game two Travis Palmer shut down the Tiger offense, holding them to only three hits over six innings. The Ute offense responded with nine runs and Utah got their first win of the season.
On Sunday, the Utes needed two homers and six RBI from Nate Weese, and a two-run homer by Sam Swenson in the ninth to pick up an 11-9 victory. Swenson finished the series 8-for-15 (.533) with six runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and four RBI.
UTAH TIDBITS
Sam Swenson responded from his tough opening weekend to go 8-for-15 (.533) against Pacific. He also added two doubles and two home runs, including the game winner in the ninth on Sunday.
Friday Ryan Bailey made his frist start of the season, going four innings while allowing only one hit and striking out four.
After opening the season 0-for-12, Donnie Saba responded in the final two games against Pacific with two hits, two runs, and a home run.
Adam Castleton currently leads the Mountain West Conference in doubles (4), and walks (10). He is also ranked in the top-10 in slugging percentage (ninth), on base percentage (fifth), runs scored (fourth) and hits (sixth).
Travis Palmer is fourth in the Mountain West Conference in ERA (1.23). He is also third in opposing batting average (.160) and sixth in innings pitched (7.1). Mitch Maio and Jon Lewis are tied for fourth with eight strike outs.
HEAD COACH TIM ESMAY
Tim Esmay enters his fifth season as Utah's head baseball coach, and is looking to break new ground in the Mountain West Conference. The MWC is scaling back to the original building blocks of the Western Athletic Conference, giving the Utes a chance to reestablish themselves as a dominant conference foe. Esmay enters the season with a 107-112-1 overall record and a 57-61 career conference mark.
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started his coaching career as a graduate student at Arizona State. He stayed at ASU for five years as an assistant coach under Jim Brock and Jeff Pentland.
