ST. GEORGE, UTAH - The Utah Utes went 1-1 on the first day of the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. After losing their opening game to Washington 8-0, the Utes (7-7) responded with a 2-1 win over Missouri.
Against Washington the Utes were held to only two hits. The Huskies jumped out early with four runs in the first and three more in the second. They added an insurance run in the fourth, but it didn't matter as the Utes couldn't get a run home off of Huskies pitcher Tia Bollinger.
For the Utes Molly McLean and Niki Hayhurst finished 1-for-2, but they were the only two Utes to even reach base. On the mound Kristin Arbogast allowed eight runs in four innings and suffered her fifth loss of the season.
In their second game against Missouri the Utes got a solo homer from McLean in the third inning, then scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a Melissa Stahnke single. The first four hitters in the Utah line-up combined to go 8-for-15 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Arbogast got the win after allowing only one earned run in seven innings of work. She had 10 strikeouts and only three walks.
