SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - The 64th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team won their fifth consecutive match and remained undefeated with a 6-1 win over Montana State on Friday, Mar. 2. The match took place at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, with the Utes coming out ahead of the Bobcats.
Utah swept the doubles matches to improve their team doubles record to 21-3 in dual play this season. The duo of Tyler Poulson and Corrie Scheepers remained undefeated at 8-0 with their win in the No. 3 position. In the singles competition, Dave Mercier dominated MSU's Thijs Goosens in the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Utah won five of six matches, losing only at the No. 2 position, to proceed to a 6-1 victory. Mountain West Conference player of the week, Nicholas Yip, breezed by MSU's B.J. Hauck in a 6-1, 6-2 win. Poulson and Scheepers each gained wins to boost their dual singles records to 7-1 each.
The win boosts Utah to a 6-2 dual record this season to lead the Mountain West Conference. Conference play will begin Mar. 22 at BYU.
The Utes will start an 11-match road trip, playing at Pepperdine on Mar. 9.
