LOKING AT THE UTES
Utah will open Mountain West Conference play with a 10-9 overall record. They are 8-8 on the raod and 2-1 on a neutral site. This weekend will wrap-up the season opening 22-game road trip. They have currently won two of their last three, and have scored 22 runs in those three games.
The Utes have six players that are hitting .318 or higher, with four of the six above .350. Six Utes have at least two homers and five players have 15 or more RBI.
On the mound Utah has three pitchers with at least two wins, led by Ryan Bailey with three. Six Utes have an ERA below five, including Mitch Maio at 1.02 and Matt McAfee with a 0.00.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO
New Mexico opened their conference schedule last weekend againt BYU. They finished 1-2 agianst the Cougars, including a 21-0 loss in the series opener. They are currently 7-13 on the season. The Lobos are the defending Mountain West Conference Champions.
Offensively they are led by Troy Cairns and his .359 batting average and eight doubles. Donny Sevieri leads the team with his two homers. As a team New Mexico is hitting .302 with six homers.
On the mound the Lobos have struggled. They have a team ERA of 8.14, last in the conference. Chris Cooper is the only Lobo with more than one win, and Jeff Perez leads the team with his 3.97 ERA. Perez also has a team high two saves.

LAST WEEKEND REWIND
Utah went 2-1 at Sacramento State including a 17 run outburt to open the series on Friday. The Utes used 23 hits to score their 17 runs.The 23 hits tied for the most in a game this season, and the 17 runs are the second most they have scored in a game this year.
In game one on Saturday eight Utes had at least one hit. Chris Shelton finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI including his fourth homer of the season, and second in as many games. Mike Westfall also collected two hits.
Game two saw the Hornets score once in the fourth and one more in the seventh to defeat Utah 2-1. The Utes got their only run on a Donald Hawes eighth inning homer, his second of the year.
UTAH TIDBITS
Utah currently leads the Mountain West Conference with its .311 batting average. It is also first in slugging percentage (.503), on base percentage (.394), runs scored (141), hits (218), runs batted in (129), doubles (44), home runs (25) and total bases (353).
Sam Swenson is ranked in the Mountain West Conference top-two in six offensive categories. He leads the league with a .767 slugging percentage and a .495 on base percentage. He is second in runs scored with 22 and home runs with six.
Nate Weese was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25. Weese went 7-for-14 (.500) with one run scored and three RBI in the three games against Arizona that week.
With his two innings in game one on Saturday, Mitch Maio lowered his ERA to 1.02, second on the team. This season he has allowed only two earned runs in 17.2 innings of work. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last five outings, a span of 12 innings.
