SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team (17-19, 6-9 MWC) fell apart fundamentally as Brigham Young University (21-14, 10-7 MWC) earned a weekend sweep, winning the finale 11-2.
BYU led 5-0 through 5-1/2 innings. The Cougars got three runs in the third inning, two of which came off the bat of Kainoa Obrey with a two-out single. They posted two more runs in the fourth. Michael Wirrick was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Lars Birkeland. Birkeland advanced to second when Tyler Perry drew a walk. Birkeland then came around to score when an errant throw by the Ute catcher on a double steal went into left field.
Utah closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth with its lone two runs of the game. Donnie Saba singled and stole second. Adam Castleton singled, driving in Saba, and advanced to second on a bobbled ball in center field. Nate Weese singled and scored Castleton for the offensive output.
A six-run seventh inning by the Cougars deflated any comeback bid.
Starting pitching was decisive in the game. Jeff Stone threw seven innings giving up two runs and eight hits for BYU, while Jason Wylie gave up five runs on five hits, while walking four with two hit batsmen.
Utah had a bright, history making moment in the seventh inning. Center fielder Sam Swenson became the all-time Utah career hits leader when he rifled a ground ball through the middle for a single. Swenson smacked out his 202nd safety as a Ute, surpassing Casey Child.
The Utes hope to get back on the winning track starting a three-game series at Air Force April13.
