SALT LAKE CITY - Eleven members of the University of Utah men's basketball team, including eight of the 14 scholarship players, have been named to the 2001 spring semester academic honor roll.
Making the honor roll with 3:00 grade point averages or better are scholarship players Lance Allred, Trace Caton, Jon Godfread, Marc Jackson, Nick Jacobson, Britton Johnsen, Jeff Johnsen and Mike Puzey. Three of the four walk-ons, Greg Schow, Jon Taylor and Mike Walkenhorst, also made the honor roll. During Rick Majerus' 12-year tenure at Utah, 28 players have made the honor roll a combined 141 times.
"I want to take this opportunity to first of all thank the professors, the academic support staff, academic advisor Rob Rainey, the athletic department support staff, as well as tutors University wide, who assisted our athletes in their very rigorous course of academic endeavor," said Ute head coach Rick Majerus. "I am very proud of these players, knowing that at least five of the eight scholarship players on the honor roll are aspirants for advanced degrees in the fields of medicine, law, business administration, and the humanities."
"These statistics speak to the overall academic excellence of the University, to the players and their commitment to a quality education, as well as to the cooperation and consideration of the faculty. Finally, and most importantly, these statistics also speak to the undergraduate teaching excellence and instructional prowess of our faculty," continued Majerus. "We are proud to be one of the nation's premier research institutions, but I am even more proud of the commitment that our faculty has shown to undergraduate education, and they are to be commended! We truly are a unique entity in higher education, a research institution that places a premium on undergraduate education. I am proud that my players have been the beneficiaries of this terrific academic experience."
The academic success of the Utah men's basketball program should continue with its incoming freshman class. The foursome has an average SAT score of 1150. Eric Osmundson, a guard from San Diego, Calif., is a four-year honor student and a three-year scholar athlete. Osmundson was also named as an Academic Honorary Captain of the San Diego Union Tribune All-Area Team. Chris Jackson, a center from Los Alamos, N.M., is a four-year honor student and a National Merit Scholarship finalist. He also has above a 4.00 GPA due to his many AP (Advanced Placement) credits. Chris Osimani, a guard from Hialeah, Fla., and Cameron Goettsche, a center from Highlands Ranch, Colo., will also be a part of Utah's freshman class in the fall.
"We are very proud of this class and I would contend without reservation or hesitation that it is very unlikely that at any other of the 319 NCAA Division I schools, there is a four-scholarship freshman class that would even begin to approximate the average SAT score of this incoming class," said Majerus. "We have always taken great pride not only in the program's success on the court, but even more so in the classroom. It has been an honor and a privilege to recruit and to coach this caliber of student-athlete. That statement may be most typified by Drew Hansen's recent (May 20) graduation from Stanford's Law School. We are certainly entrusted with and the beneficiary of an incoming freshman class that has had special academic achievement in conjunction with athletic success."
"I am very excited for this caliber of student-athlete to represent the University," continued Majerus. "I am really pleased to help them undertake the challenges that lie ahead in the classroom, as well as on the court."
