Salt Lake City - The No. 21 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team opened the season with a win over the Rhode Island Rams in three games, 30-13, 30-16, 30-14 at Crimson Court on Fri., Aug. 31. Utah improves to 1-0 overall, 0-0 in the MWC. Rhode Island falls to 0-1 on the season
Junior Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with 10 kills, four digs and racked up 12 points in the match. Freshman middle blocker Kim Turner totaled seven kills for a career-high .778 hitting percentage, along with four digs and three total blocks. Turner was responsible for 9.5 of Utah's points in the match. Alisa Geddes, Adrianne Bradley-Drake and Katrena Ellett each notched six kills. Geddes posted a career-high six service aces. Setters Tracy Neumeier and Kelsie Kartchner combined for 34 assists. As a team Utah posted an impressive .434 hitting percentage and 11.0 total team blocks.
For the Rams, Yolanda Bogacz totaled eight kills and four digs. Juliana Valencia notched 16 assists. Rhode Island hit for a negative .058, adding just 4.0 total team blocks.
"We did a lot of really good things," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "They (Utah team) are handling the pressure very well. I will expect a very physical match-up with Georgia Tech tonight. "
UP NEXT: The Utes will face Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 31st at Crimson Court. Utah travels to Tucson, Ariz. to participate in the Arizona Tournament on Sept. 6-7, at the McKale Center. The Utes will take on the No. 6 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Thurs., Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. On Fri., Sept. 7, Utah will match-up with Louisville. Match-time is TBA.
