Salt Lake City - The No. 21 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the No. 25 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in three games, 30-27, 30-27, 30-23 at Crimson Court on Fri., Aug. 31. The Utes are the only undefeated team left in the Utah Classic. Utah improves to 2-0 overall, 0-0 in the MWC. Georgia Tech falls to 1-1 on the season.
Senior Alisa Geddes led the Utes with her first double-double of the season. She racked up 14 kills for a .269 hitting percentage, 12 digs and two total blocks. Geddes took charge offensively as she notched 15.0 points in the match. Junior Sylva Strzinkova posted 11 kills, nine digs and racked up 11.5 points in the match. Senior Adrianne Bradley-Drake had eight kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Kim Turner totaled 11 kills. As a team Utah posted a .233 hitting percentage and 9.0 total team blocks.
For the Yellow Jackets, Kyleen Bell totaled 11 kills, three digs and three digs. Kele Eveland notched 34 assists and seven digs. Georgia Tech hit for just .135, adding 6.0 total team blocks.
"I was concerned about this match because they (Georgia Tech) took a European trip and had eight matches under their belt already," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "Our experience really showed and our team knows what our goals are and what it takes to win matches. Whatever they threw at us, we handled and I am proud of that. "
UP NEXT: The Utes will face Texas Tech at 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 1st at Crimson Court. Utah travels to Tucson, Ariz. to participate in the Arizona Tournament on Sept. 6-7, at the McKale Center. The Utes will take on the No. 6 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Thurs., Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. On Fri., Sept. 7, Utah will match-up with Louisville. Match-time is TBA.
