Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball team enjoyed success off the field through many academic accomplishments in the fall semester 2001. Twelve Utes made the honor roll with five athletes also earning Dean's List honors. That is 67 percent (12 out of 18) of the athletes on the team receiving academic recognition in the fall of 2001.
Six starters and six reserves were named to the fall semester honor roll. Athletes qualifying with at least a 3.00 grade point average were Heather Bowlin, Texie Criddle, Bryanne Durance, Niki Hayhurst, Angie Kenney, Michele Larsen, Kelsie Lewis, Molly McLean, Masie Ota, Christa Pfeninger, Tiffany Randall and Melissa Stahnke. Bowlin, Kenney, Ota, Randall and Stahnke also garnered Dean's List honors with a 3.50 GPA or better. A total of 25 players have made the honor roll a combined 71 times (18 quarters and 53 semesters) during Coach Stevens' six-year tenure at Utah.
Utah softball was also honored for its academic success by the Mountain West Conference for the spring semester 2001. Bowlin, Becky Culligan, Hayhurst, Amberly Jeppson, Kenney, Carrie Kosderka, McLean, Ota, Pfeninger and Stahnke earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference recognition.
Utah, 37-25-1 overall last season, returns nine letterwinners and seven starters to a team that finished second in conference play with an 11-8-1 record.
"It has been my goal to have this team excel in all areas of their life," said head coach Mona Stevens. "We have more athletes on both the all-conference team and the Academic all-conference team than any other team in our conference. That has been our goal for quite some time and one that we reached last spring. It is a tribute to our athletes and to their efforts to be able to maintain at least a 3.0 team GPA. It is an honor to be recognized by the University of Utah and by the Mountain West Conference. It takes great individuals to achieve what our athletes have and I'm really proud of them," said Stevens.
