College Station, Texas - The University of Utah softball team is currently on a two-game win streak. The Utes defeated the Boston College Eagles, 6-2 and the Arkansas Razorbacks, 3-0 on Fri., Feb. 15 at the Verizon Aggie Invitational held at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Utah is currently 6-9-0 overall, 0-0 in MWC play. Boston College drops to 0-1 overall, while Arkansas falls to 9-3.
In the first game vs. Boston College, senior Molly McLean went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Teammate Melissa Stahnke and Masie Ota tallied two hits each, while Bryanne Durance went 1-for-1 with two runs and an RBI. Junior Jen Pursell tallied the win for Utah. Pursell threw seven innings and gave up three hits, zero earned runs, two walks and struck nine four batters in the game. Pursell is now 3-5 on the season. As a team, the Utes racked up eight hits, six runs and five RBI in 27 at bats.
For the Eagles, Erin Mackey, Cara Blumfield and Tekae Malandris recorded one hit each. Blumfield tallied a double and two RBI in the game. Malandris took the loss for Boston College. She drops to 0-1 overall.
Game two saw Utah's first baseman Niki Hayhurst bring out the bats. Hayhurst went 1-for-2 with a double, one run and two RBI. Teammate Michele Larsen went 1-for-3 with and RBI, while Masie Ota, Melissa Stahnke and Heather Bowlin picked up a hit a piece. Bowlin went the distance, throwing all seven innings, giving up just four hits, zero runs, one walk and struck out two in 25 batters faced. She now moves to 3-4 overall.
The Razorbacks stranded five on the bases and managed just four hits in the game. Heather Schlichtman took the loss for Arkansas, she drops to 4-1 on the season.
UP NEXT: On Sat., Feb. 16, Utah will take on Texas A&M at 10:00 a.m. and Arkansas at 1:15 p.m. The Utes will play Boston College at 10:00 a.m. on Sun., Feb. 17 and Texas A&M at 2:00 p.m. On Tues., Feb. 19, the Utes will take on Southwest Texas at 3:00 p.m. in a doubleheader match-up in San Marcos, Texas. On Feb. 22-24, Utah will head to Columbus, Ga., participating in the Lead-Off Classic. The Utes will host the Red Desert Classic on Fri.-Sun., Mar. 1-3 in St. George, Utah. Utah opens its home schedule hosting the defending national champion Arizona Wildcats on Sat.-Sun., Mar. 9-10 at 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. On Thurs.-Sat., Mar. 14-17, the Utes travel to Fullerton, Calif. to participate in the Cal-State Fullerton Kia Classic. On Wed., Mar. 20, Utah is back at home taking on in-state rival Utah State at 3:00 p.m. On Fri., Mar. 29, the Utes open MWC play, hosting the Aztecs of San Diego State in a doubleheader contest at 1:00 p.m. Utah continues MWC play facing UNLV on Sat., Mar. 30 at 3:00 p.m at Ute Field.
