ST. GEORGE, Utah--The Utes used an aggressive offensive attack and great pitching to blank UC Santa Barbara, 5-0 on Friday afternoon during the Red Desert Classic. Utah put up nine hits in the game and stole three bases. The win moves the Utes to 8-19.
The scoring began for Utah in the bottom of the second inning when Molly McLean hit a two-out two-run homer over the left field wall. Utah added another run in the third after Melissa Stahnke knocked out her team-high fifth home run to give the Utes a 3-0 lead.
The Utes scored two more runs in the fourth to push the lead to, 5-0. In the sixth, Utah scored a run after Niki Hayhurst singled to right field to score Masie Ota. The next batter, Kelsie Lewis, doubled to right field and knocked in two more runs to make it an 8-0 victory and to end the game because of the mercy rule.
For Utah, McLean finished the game 4-of-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBI. Hayhurst added two hits for the Utes and knocked in a run. Jen Pursell threw a three-hit shutout and struck out two in the game.
