Utah Quick Hits
After winning 11 of its last 15 games, Utah dropped three in a row to New Mexico in its conference opener last weekend. This is the first three-game skid for the Utes this season, but they did have a four-game losing streak during their first two series. As a team, Utah's batting average improved from .304 before the Lobo series to .316 at the series end. But on the flip side, the Utes watched their team ERA jump from from 5.50 to 6.59 after the series.
Utah vs. UNLV Notes
Both teams will be looking for its first conference win of the season this weekend. The Utes are out hitting their opponents 193-181, while the Rebels are getting out hit by their opponents 177-124. Last season, the Utes split with UNLV, three games a piece. Utah was 1-2 in Las Vegas and 2-1 in Salt Lake City.
Scouting UNLV
The Rebels were swept by Brigham Young at home to open conference play last week. On the season, UNLV is 10-13 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Rebels are batting .263 as a team and have three guys hitting over .300. Jared Bonnell (2-1) is the only Rebel with more than one win. Bonnell has an 8.70 ERA, while UNLV as a team boasts a 7.05 ERA.
Last Week
Despite posting 32 runs off 48 hits, Utah was swept by New Mexico in both teams conference series opener. New Mexico bested Utah's 14 hits with 15 en route to a 13-9 victory in game one. In game two, New Mexico used a 12-run fourth inning to top Utah, 20-11. The Utes played catch up to the Lobos in game three, including a four-run rally in the ninth, but left runners stranded on second and third to end the game, 13-12.
Who's Hot
Brett Baldwin finished the New Mexico series with a team-high .643 batting average, going 9-of-14 with two RBI. During the Utes' first four series, Baldwin was hitting .159, but has rocketed his average to .442 over the past four series.
Adam Castleton improved his hitting streak to 12 games after last weekend. During those 12 games, Castleton has a .517 average with 24 RBI, five home runs and eight doubles.
Steaking Utes
Senior Nate Weese extended his team-high hitting streak to 18 games after hitting safely in each of the Utes' outings against New Mexico last weekend. The senior first baseman has at least one hit in all but one of Utah's 20 games.
