COMING UP: On Fri., Mar. 29, the Utes open MWC play on the road, facing the Aztecs of San Diego State in a doubleheader contest at 1:00 p.m. Utah continues MWC play facing UNLV on Sat., Mar. 30 at 3:00 p.m in Las Vegas, Nev. (DH).
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: Utah played on the road for the whole month of February. Currently, the Utes are 10-26-0 overall, 0-0-0 in MWC play. Utah is currently on a seven-game losing streak. Due to bad weather, Utah's softball games scheduled for Wed., Mar. 20 against Utah State were rescheduled for Tues., Apr. 23 at 3:00 p.m. (single-game).
Utah has already faced 10 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Utes could possibly face 15 more teams this season that made it to post-season play in 2001. Utah has faced 14 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 0-18 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming MWC games- "Well, there will be no rest for the weary as we open conference play. Our challenge is finding that comfort zone. We have to keep perfecting things and keep improving in order to be successful."
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The San Diego State softball team is currently 22-15-1 overall. Most recently, the Aztecs recorded a 6-2 loss and a 4-2 win over St. Mary's on Sun., Mar. 24 in San Diego, Calif.
The Aztecs return six starters, 11 letterwinners and adds six newcomers to its roster. Tiffany Goudy leads the team with a .345 batting average and totals 39 hits, 18 runs, seven doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 RBI in 113 at bats. Teammate Sarah Hershman averages .318 on the season and has racked up 34 hits, 12 runs, six doubles, and two triples for 13 RBI in 107 at bats. Bre DeSanta leads San Diego State on the mound with a 1.63 ERA in 93.2 innings pitched. As a team, the Aztecs have a .231 batting average and a 2.29 ERA.
Kathy Van Wyk is in her sixth season as San Diego State's head coach and posts a 154-141 record overall.
SCOUTING UNLV: The UNLV softball team is currently 18-19 overall. Most recently, the Rebels split with Portland State. UNLV won the first game, 1-0 and lost the late game, 7-3 on Sun., Mar. 24 in Portland, Ore.
The Rebels return six starters, 11 letterwinners and adds seven newcomers to its roster. Geney Orris leads the team with a .292 batting average and totals 28 hits, 18 runs, seven doubles, one triple, six homers and 17 RBI in 96 at bats. Teammate Pauline Glenn averages .256 on the season and has racked up 23 hits, 18 runs, four doubles, and four home runs for 14 RBI in 90 at bats. Jackie Kerrigan leads UNLV on the mound with a 1.65 ERA in 85.0 innings pitched. As a team, the Rebels have a .225 batting average and a 2.64 ERA.
Shan McDonald is in her 16th season at the helm of the UNLV softball program. She has a 460-416 career record.
UP NEXT: The Utes will travel to Logan, Utah on Tues., Apr. 2, matching-up with Utah State at 3:00 p.m. On Thurs., Apr. 4, Utah will host Pacific at 3:00 p.m. The Utes will take on the New Mexico Lobos on Fri., Apr. 5 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and Colorado State on Sat., Apr. 6 at 12:00 p.m. (DH).
HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS: Mona Stevens, who has built a reputation as one of the top coaches in the nation on both the national and international levels, is in her fifth season as head coach at Utah.
Stevens has the best winning percentage in school history. She currently posts a 197-140-1 (.584) career overall record and a 75-47-1 (.614) career conference record in five seasons. Her 2000 team was the NCAA Region 1 Tournament runner-up, and placed third in the NCAA Regional Tournament in 1997. Stevens was selected as the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and posted her 150th career win at the NCAA Region 1 Tournament with a 4-1 win over Mississippi State on May 20.
2002 UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team leads the MWC in hits (213), and at bats (927). The Utes are second in doubles (31), total bases (286) batters struck out (157), innings pitched (231.1) and third in sac bunts (24), home runs (12), walks (80), triples (3). Utah is fourth in batters struck out looking (29), opposing batting average (.264), ERA (2.94) and on base percentage (.303), and fifth in RBI (76), stolen bases (25), batting average (.230), slugging percentage (.309), runs scored (88). Individually, 11 Utah players ranked among the top 10 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 57 times.
STEVENS APPROACHES 200TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Mona Stevens is quickly approaching her 200th career win and needs just three more wins to hit the mark.
