SAN DIEGO - San Diego State seemed unstoppable in the first game, outhitting Utah 10-5 and finishing the game in the bottom of the sixth with a 9-1 win, but couldn't keep things going with a 4-2 loss in game two of the doubleheader. The games mark the beginning of Mountain West conference play for both teams.
Utah was the first on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field by Niki Hayhurst that sent Masie Ota in for the score. The Aztecs fired back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The first was a sacrifice fly off of the bat of sophomore Janna Kovensky sending senior Kellie Nordhagen home. The second was a run scored by Joann Figueroa on an illegal pitch by Ute pitcher Jen Pursell.
The rest of the game was all San Diego State. Two runs were scored in the third when Tiffany Goudy singled to left field and Kovensky scored with Figueroa behind on a throwing error by the catcher. The four-run marathon in the fourth began when junior Amber Grahlman doubled to right field. Aztec pitcher Bre DeSanta came in for Grahlman and scored, along with designated player Danielle Touhey on a single through the right side by Figueroa.
The final run was a double by senior Summer Ehrsam that brought Grahlman home.
DeSanta pitched her seventh complete game, giving up five hits and one run in six innings of work. The win gives her an 8-7 record in the circle. The loss was given to Utah pitcher Pursell dropping her record to 4-15. Pursell gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in the circle.
The second game started in much of the same way. Utah scored first with a single by Melissa Stahnke sending Lyndsey Trevis home. The Aztecs responded with a single off of the bat of Goudy giving Kovensky the run.
Utah scored two more in the third when Molly McLean hit her third homerun of the season for the first run. Stahnke drove in Trevis for the second run off of a single to right field.
State came up short with a run in the third with a sac fly by Kovensky sending Nordhagen home for the final Aztec run.
Korin Gregory started the game for the Aztecs and earned the loss dropping her record to 4-2. Gregory gave up five hits and two earned runs in four innings of work. Jessi Green and DeSanta came in as relief for State, giving up a combined two hits in three innings. Utah pitcher Heather Bowlin was credited with the win bringing her record to 7-11. Bowlin gave up eight hits and two earned runs.
