Scouting The Coyotes
Albertson is coming off a split doubleheader with Western Baptist last Saturday. The Coyotes won game one, 4-2, but dropped the second game, 10-8. Before the doubleheader, the Coyote pitchers had thrown 30.1 scoreless innings. Guiding the 'Yotes' pitching staff is Chris Eggleston. He boasts a superb 1.12 ERA with a 5-1 record in six appearances. Leading Albertson's plate attack are a pair of Scotts. Scott Skeen has a team-high 27 hits with 11 RBI and Scott Freeman has knocked in 14 runs off 25 hits.
Last Week
Utah won its conference series against pre-season favorite San Diego State by taking two-of-three games. In game one, Jason Wylie and Donald Hawes led the Utes to a 5-3 win. Wylie (4-4) threw 7.2 innings, and allowed three runs to pick up his fourth win. Trailing, 3-2 in the seventh, Hawes ripped a three-run shot over the right center wall to put the Utes up, 5-3. Game two was ugly for Utah as it had its worst offensive performance of the season and committed three costly errors. San Diego State pitcher Rory Shortell held the Utes to four hits, their lowest total of the year, and one run as the Aztecs trounced Utah, 16-1. But Utah came roaring back to grab game three, 3-1, led by Mitch Maio's outstanding performance on the mound. Maio (5-1) tied his career high of 11 strikeouts for the second time this season en route to his third complete game of the year and team-high fifth win.
Esmay Insights
"Winning game one set us up to win the San Diego State series. We proved to our team that pitching and defense win games rather than relying on offensive output everyday. We got great pitching from Jason (Wylie) and Mitch (Maio) this weekend. We didn't give Cheyenne (Rushton) any help on Saturday by committing the three errors."
"The Albertson games are another good opportunity for us to play at home and get guys innings. We should prove how deep we are at the positions and on the mound."
