Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball team split with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a non-conference match-up at Ute Field on Wed., Apr. 10. The Utes lost the first game, 5-3 and won the late game, 5-2. Utah improves to 17-31 overall, 5-3 in MWC play. Southern Utah moves to 17-21 on the season.
In game one for the Utes, senior Lyndsey Trevis went 1-for-3 with a home run, one run and two RBI. Niki Hayhurst was a perfect 1-for-1 in the game, while teammates Melissa Stahnke and Masie Ota picked up a hit a piece. Heather Bowlin (9-15) took the loss for Utah, and gave up 10 hits, five runs and zero walks in 31 batters faced. As a team, Utah tallied just four hits in 24 at bats, along with three runs and three RBI.
Southern Utah's Rulen Andrade went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Teammate Crystal Bingham was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Lacee LePrey was 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI. LePrey (10-8) pitched 7.0 innings and gave up four hits, three runs and four walks in 30 batters faced.
Game two saw the Utes jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Utes scored two more in the bottom of the fifth to keep the lead. Southern Utah scored one more run in the top of the sixth, but Utah's Trevis rocked a double to right field and teammates Texie Criddle and Christa Pfeninger scored on the play to seal the deal. In the game, senior Molly McLean went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and one RBI. Junior Jen Pursell (8-15) picked up the win in the second game. She pitched 7.0 innings, giving up six hits, two runs and one walk in 29 batters faced. As a team, Utah tallied 11 hits, five runs and five RBI in 27 at bats.
April Cox went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, while Precious Gallo and Bingham picked up a homer each. Tracy Evans (4-6) recorded the loss for SUU. She pitched 6.0 innings, giving up 11 hits, five runs and one walk in 31 batters faced.
UP NEXT: The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Sat., Apr. 13 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field. Utah hits the road on Tues., Apr. 16, facing the Utah State Aggies in a single-game at 3:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah. On Thurs., Apr. 18, the Utes will host Cal-State Northridge for a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 19 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 20 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field. On Tues., Apr. 23, the Utes take on the Utah State Aggies in a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
