Salt Lake City - The University of Utah softball team swept the Brigham Young Cougars, 3-2 and 8-7, in a MWC match-up at Ute Field on Sat., Apr. 13. The Utes made two remarkable come backs in extra-inning play to sweep their in-state foe. Utah improves to 19-31 overall, 7-3 in MWC play. BYU drops to 26-18 on the season, 3-7 in the MWC.
In game one Utah's Traci Keller notched the game winning triple in the bottom of the eight inning to lift the Utes to a 3-2 win over the Cougars. Senior Molly McLean went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Christa Pfeninger went 2-for-3 while Melissa Stahnke went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Heather Bowlin pitched three innings and gave up five hits, two runs and two walks in 16 batters faced. Jen Pursell (9-15) closed the game and recorded the win for Utah. Pursell pitched 5.0 innings and gave up six hits, zero runs, three walks and struck out three in 24 batters faced. As a team, Utah tallied seven hits in 25 at bats, along with three runs and three RBI.
BYU's Oli Keohohou went 1-for-2 with a double and one run scored. Teammate Brooke Cadiente was 2-for-5 with a double, while Liz Vanderlindon went 2-for-3 with a double. Niki Andersen (7-7) tallied the loss for BYU after giving up seven hits, three runs and six walks in 7.1 innings pitched.
Game two saw the Utes jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The Cougars came back to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning (7-3), but the Utes chipped away and tied the game at seven a piece in the bottom of the seventh inning. Utah's defense in the top of the eighth held the Cougars scoreless and shortstop Melissa Stahnke hit a solo home run to win the game for the Utes.
Stahnke went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and three RBI. McLean went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, and Angie Kenney went 3-for-4 with one runs scored and an RBI. As a team, Utah tallied 11 hits, eight runs and eight RBI in 32 at bats.
Keohohou went 1-for-2 in the game with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI, while Ariel Capra picked up a home run. Andersen (7-7) came into the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and recorded the loss for BYU.
UP NEXT: Utah hits the road on Tues., Apr. 16, facing the Utah State Aggies in a single-game at 3:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah. On Thurs., Apr. 18, the Utes will host Cal-State Northridge for a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 19 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 20 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field. On Tues., Apr. 23, the Utes take on the Utah State Aggies in a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face Southern Utah on Wed., Apr. 24 for a single-game match-up in Cedar City, Utah at 3:00 p.m. On Sat., Apr. 27, the Utes will play in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah (DH) at 12:00 p.m. Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3, facing New Mexico in a doubleheader match-up at 1:00 p.m. On Sun., May 5, the Utes will take on the Colorado State Rams at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colo (DH). The Utes will host the Utah State Aggies in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. on Tues., May 7. On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
