COMING UP: Utah hits the road on Tues., Apr. 16, facing the Utah State Aggies in a single-game at 3:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah. On Thurs., Apr. 18, the Utes will host Cal-State Northridge for a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 19 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 20 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The University of Utah softball team made two amazing comebacks to sweep the BYU Cougars, 3-2 and 8-7, in a MWC match-up at Ute Field on Sat., Apr. 13. The Utes split with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a non-conference match-up at Ute Field on Wed., Apr. 10. The Utes lost the first game, 5-3 and won the late game, 5-2. Currently, the Utes are 19-31-0 overall, 7-3 in MWC play. Utah is on a three-game win streak.
Utah has already faced 11 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Utes will face two more teams this season that made it to post-season play in 2001. Utah has already faced 23 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 1-21 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming non-conference and MWC games- "After coming off last week and two great wins on Saturday, I feel the team is much more stable, prepared and confident about where they are going. I think they will be a lot tougher to beat now that their confidence level is up. I think its great to be at home again this weekend and these are big games for us. I am confident we will show up and play tough."
SCOUTING UTAH STATE: The Utah State softball team is currently 5-37 overall. Most recently, the Aggies recorded a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State on Sun., Apr. 14 in Sacramento, Calif. In the first game, Utah State dropped a 6-0 decision to the Hornets.
The Aggies return eight starters, 14 letterwinners and adds two newcomers to its roster. Breanne Smith leads the team with a .276 batting average and totals 29 hits, 10 runs, five doubles, two triples, three homers and 14 RBI in 105 at bats. Teammate Heather Curtis averages .270 on the season and has racked up 34 hits, 11 runs, five doubles, and one home run for nine RBI in 126 at bats. Kristin Hommel leads Utah State on the mound with a 3.44 ERA in 116.0 innings pitched. As a team, the Aggies have a .193 batting average and a 4.16 ERA.
Debbie Bilbao (Iowa, 1999) is in her first season as Utah State's head coach and her first season as a head coach overall.
SCOUTING CAL-STATE NORTHRIDGE: The Cal-State Northridge softball team is currently 23-18 overall. Most recently, the Matadors went 2-3 in a weekend series vs. Cal Poly. On Sat., Apr. 13, Cal-State Northridge split with Cal Poly, winning the first game, 5-1 and losing the late game, 1-0, in San Luis, Obispo, Calif. On Sun., Apr. 14, the Matadors defeated the Mustangs, 8-0 in five innings.
The Matadors return seven letterwinners and adds eight newcomers to its roster. Christen Bedwell leads the team with a .358 batting average and totals 43 hits, 22 runs, 11 doubles, three homers and 25 RBI in 120 at bats. Teammate Sondra Milchiker averages .323 on the season and has racked up 42 hits, 27 runs, nine doubles, and four home runs for 23 RBI in 130 at bats. Jenny Wheeler leads Cal-State Northridge on the mound with a 1.54 ERA in 113.1 innings pitched. As a team, the Matadors have a .271 batting average and a 2.56 ERA.
Barbara Jordan is in her first season as Cal-State Northridge's head coach.
SCOUTING UNLV: The UNLV softball team is currently 23-29 overall, 3-7 in MWC play. Most recently, the Rebels split with New Mexico, losing the first game, 6-1 and winning the late game, 6-4 on Sun., Apr. 14 in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rebels return six starters, 11 letterwinners and adds seven newcomers to its roster. Lisa Moses leads the team with a .329 batting average and totals 46 hits, 13 runs, five doubles, two triples and 11 RBI in 140 at bats. Teammate Geney Orris averages .323 on the season and has racked up 50 hits, 28 runs, 13 doubles, one triple and eight home runs for 28 RBI in 155 at bats. Jackie Kerrigan leads UNLV on the mound with a 2.12 ERA in 132.0 innings pitched. As a team, the Rebels have a .244 batting average and a 2.73 ERA.
Shan McDonald is in her 16th season at the helm of the UNLV softball program. She has a 460-416 career record.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The San Diego State softball team is currently 31-19-1 overall, 8-2 in MWC play. Most recently, the Aztecs swept the Colorado State Rams, 3-1 and 4-1 on Sun., Apr. 14 in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Aztecs return six starters, 11 letterwinners and adds six newcomers to its roster. Tiffany Goudy leads the team with a .365 batting average and totals 57 hits, 27 runs, nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 30 RBI in 156 at bats. Teammate Sarah Hershman averages .310 on the season and has racked up 45 hits, 18 runs, 10 doubles, and three triples for 19 RBI in 145 at bats. Bre DeSanta leads San Diego State on the mound with a 1.11 ERA in 151.2 innings pitched. As a team, the Aztecs have a .244 batting average and a 1.87 ERA.
Kathy Van Wyk is in her sixth season as San Diego State's head coach and posts a 154-141 record overall.

HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS: Mona Stevens, who has built a reputation as one of the top coaches in the nation on both the national and international levels, is in her fifth season as head coach at Utah.
Stevens has the best winning percentage in school history. She currently posts a 206-145-1 (.587) career overall record and an 82-50-1 (.620) career conference record in five seasons. Her 2000 team was the NCAA Region 1 Tournament runner-up, and placed third in the NCAA Regional Tournament in 1997. Stevens was selected as the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
2002 UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team is second in the MWC in hits (326), and at bats (1303). The Utes are second in doubles (47) and batters struck out (194) and third in innings pitched (328.1), on base percentage (.323), total bases (451), walks (116) and batting average (.250). Utah is fourth in sac bunts (43), triples (6), home runs (22), opposing batting average (.283), RBI (128), slugging percentage (.346), stolen bases (40), ERA (3.13) and fifth in batters struck out looking (29) and runs scored (145). Individually, 11 Utah players ranked among the top 10 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 57 times.
STEVENS HITS 200TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Mona Stevens recorded her 200th career win on Tues., Apr. 2 with a 6-2 victory over Utah State in Logan, Utah.
SOFTBALL HITS 800TH CAREER WIN: Utah, as a team recorded its 800th career win on Sat., Apr. 14 with an 8-7 victory over in-state rival BYU.
