COMING UP: On Tues., Apr. 23, the Utes take on the Utah State Aggies in a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face Southern Utah on Wed., Apr. 24 for a single-game match-up in Cedar City, Utah at 3:00 p.m. On Sat., Apr. 27, the Utes will play in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah (DH) at 12:00 p.m.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The University of Utah softball, team for the third week in a row, made two amazing comebacks and defeated the UNLV Rebels, 11-10 and 6-5 in Salt Lake City on Sun., Apr. 21. The Utes defeated the Cal-State Northridge Matadors, 1-0 in a non-conference match-up in Salt Lake City on Thurs., Apr. 18. Utah?s games against San Diego State and Utah State were canceled due to bad weather. Currently, the Utes are 22-31-0 overall, 7-3 in MWC play. Utah is on a six-game win streak.
Utah has already faced 12 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Utes will face one more team this season that made it to post-season play in 2001. Utah has already faced 24 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 2-21 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
The Mountain West Conference declared Sunday?s softball doubleheader between Utah and UNLV as a non-conference contest, and the games will not count toward either team?s league record or rank. Citing a rule in the conference by-laws, games may only be counted as conference games if they are played on the originally scheduled date. The Utes and the Rebels were slated to face each other on Friday, April 19, but snow in the Salt Lake City area forced a postponement. Both UNLV and Utah had action also scheduled for Saturday, April 20, so the twin bill was pushed back to Sunday, April 21. Utah won both games of the marathon feature, 11-10 and 6-5 in 11 innings. Had the games counted toward their league record, the Utes (22-31, 7-3) would share the league lead with San Diego State. Utah?s showdown with San Diego State for the inside track on the league title was also abandoned.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming non-conference and MWC games- ?After coming off last week and two more great wins on Sunday, I feel the team continues its stability and is prepared and confident about where they are going. I think they will be a lot tougher to beat now that their confidence level is up. I think these are big games for us. I am confident we will show up and play tough.?
