COMING UP: Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3, facing New Mexico in a doubleheader match-up at 1:00 p.m. On Sun., May 5, the Utes will take on the Colorado State Rams at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colo (DH).
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The University of Utah softball team ended a six-game win streak with a 5-4 extra inning loss to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a non-conference match-up in Cedar City, Utah on Wed., Apr. 24. Previously, The Utes defeated the Utah State Aggies, 5-0 in a non-conference match-up in Salt Lake City on Tues., Apr. 23. Utah?s games against BYU on Sat., Apr. 27 were canceled due to bad weather. Currently, the Utes are 23-32-0 overall, 7-3 in MWC play.
Utah has already faced 12 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. Utah has already faced 24 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 2-21 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming MWC games- ?I feel the team is stable, prepared and confident about where they are going. I think they will be tough to beat now that their confidence level is up. I think these are big games for us and it is always tough to play on the road. I am confident we will show up and play tough.?
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO: The New Mexico softball team is currently 14-26-1 overall, 6-9 in MWC play. Most recently, New Mexico was swept by San Diego State, 4-2 and 2-0 on Sun., Apr. 28 in San Diego, Calif. Previously, the Lobos dropped two games to UNLV, 6-5 and 4-2 on Fri., Apr. 26 in Las Vegas, Nev. Currently, New Mexico is on a four-game losing streak.
Leading the Lobos is Kelly Glass. She has a .346 batting average and totals 45 hits, 13 runs, one double and six RBI in 130 at bats. Teammate Brooke Chaffee averages .328 on the season and has racked up 40 hits, 14 runs, 10 doubles, one triple, five homers and 18 RBI in 122 at bats. Hayley Punter leads the Lobos on the mound with a 5.13 ERA in 107.0 innings pitched. As a team, New Mexico has a .249 batting average and a 5.23 ERA.
Susan Craig is in her 25th season at the helm of the New Mexico softball program. She has a 657-557-1 career record.
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE: The Colorado State softball team is currently 17-27 overall, 4-11 in MWC play. Most recently, the Rams dropped two games to UNLV, 10-4 and 2-1 on Sun., Apr. 28. Previously, CSU was swept by San Diego State, 9-2 and 1-0 on Fri., Apr. 26. Currently, the Rams are on a seven-game losing streak.
Leading the Rams is Ricki Walker. She has a .307 batting average and totals 43 hits, 15 runs, six doubles, four homers and 21 RBI in 140 at bats. Teammate Amanda Kocis averages .304 on the season and has racked up 38 hits, 16 runs, seven doubles and 15 RBI in 125 at bats. Melanie Mahoney leads CSU on the mound with a 2.27 ERA in 139.0 innings pitched. As a team, the Rams have a .262 batting average and a 2.44 ERA.
Mary Yori is in her 2nd season at the helm of the CSU softball program. She has a 459-158 career record.
UP NEXT: The Utes will host the Utah State Aggies in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. on Tues., May 7. On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS: Mona Stevens, who has built a reputation as one of the top coaches in the nation on both the national and international levels, is in her fifth season as head coach at Utah.
Stevens has the best winning percentage in school history. She currently posts a 210-146-1 (.590) career overall record and an 82-50-1 (.620) career conference record in five seasons. Her 2000 team was the NCAA Region 1 Tournament runner-up, and placed third in the NCAA Regional Tournament in 1997. Stevens was selected as the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
2002 UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team is second in the MWC in hits (373), and at bats (1450). The Utes are second in doubles (59) and batters struck out (215) and third in innings pitched (367.2), on base percentage (.332), total bases (524), walks (133) and batting average (.257). Utah is fourth in sac bunts (50), triples (6), home runs (26), opposing batting average (.276), RBI (152), slugging percentage (.361), stolen bases (50), ERA (2.95) and fifth in batters struck out looking (29) and runs scored (172). Individually, 11 Utah players ranked among the top 10 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 57 times.
STEVENS HITS 200TH CAREER WIN: Utah?s winningest coach in school history, Mona Stevens recorded her 200th career win on Tues., Apr. 2 with a 6-2 victory over Utah State in Logan, Utah.
SOFTBALL HITS 800TH CAREER WIN: Utah, as a team recorded its 800th career win on Sat., Apr. 14 with an 8-7 victory over in-state rival BYU.
